Can someone explain the practical aspects of 510 ElmCrest?

I currently have an X58 chipset in a laptop with an X25-m 160GB SSD as boot which runs Crystal at 260MB/s sequential READ. I’m not so sure popping for a new 510 ElmCrest SSD is a cost effective improvement when running the old Intel X58 chipset.

Since the SSD is so small, like many others have done, I moved all my data files, Temps, etc out to my two SATA II onboard spin drives with the bus running at 250MB/s max. Even though the 510 @ 6 Gbps can run up to 500-R/310-W MBps, doesn’t the throughput all get bottlenecked at the X58 chips and 250 buses on the way to the spin drives?

So what’s the point of the 6Gig 510 on an X58 mobo? Or is my naïve, uninformed novice understanding missing something here? Can someone explain how this works out in the real world practical sense… buying a 510 for performance when used with an X58 board, that is?

i would not upgrade from the X25-M 160GB to the new 510...unless you are doing it to get more capacity. The improvement on read/write speeds are really not that important for running an OS...nowhere near as important as the random access time benefits that you get from the SSD. I think you would be disappointed in anything outside of a benchmark with that upgrade. Now, if you were using the SSD's for storage, that extra speed would be wonderful, but I'm not aware of anybody using SSD's yet for storage due to high cost.

Thanks pparks, you helped save me $600. I think I'll wait til Sager gets the Intel 6GB chipset onboard, then invest in the 510 250GB. Who knows... by then maybe Intel will have their SandForce driven 522-series on the shelf which is supposedly designed to be their factory hotrod (or maybe their SF-G3 by then) at which time I'll probaby get that one with my new laptop; as I willl likely need more app space by then. Plus I'd like to put my Temps and search function back on the boot.

Thanks again, I appreciate the quick response!
