Asus D2X/Guitar Tuner Setup

I've been going in circles trying to get guitar input to my software tuner for the obvious purpose of tuning the guitar. I've tried setting the recording device to every option in W7, and adjusted the source in the tuner accordingly, but it is receiving nothing. I've got the guitar cable connected to the microphone input, as I think that is supposed to be preferable to line-in.

I doubt that it is related, but when I select a string on the software tuner, it does play, but with ~ a 1 second delay, which wasn't there with my old Audigy 2 ZS card.

WHAT AM I MISSING?

Firstly don't use the microphone port. Use a line in, also if you have active pick ups you can damage your sound card.

Second your gonna have to provide more information about what the doftware is, and what hardware your using.

I'm not sure what kind of pickups the guitar has, but it never damaged my Audigy 2 ZS, so I believe it should work okay. The tuner the In-Tune Multi-Instrument Tuner:

My hardware is listed in My System Specs. Lastly, my tuner software is superior to that online tuner...if I can make it work. The first screenshot below is of the program, and the second is the error produced when I attempt to choose Line-In as the source. I get the same error on several of the other options also, and have no idea of how to correct them.

A guitar output signal is an "instrument level" signal and very low compared to the signal level required by the PC for either a mic or line input (closer to "line level"). Normally, if you want to connect a guitar to the PC you need some type of amplifier - either through a mixer or the "line out" or "recording out" of a guitar amp.

If you have a PC microphone (not something like an SM58) that works with the PC you could use that with the guitar and an amp to tune. On the other hand you can buy a tuner for $10 from Musician's Friend and use that rather than the PC. But for PC tuning I like the Peterson Strobe Tuner, which is similar to the strobe tuners they sell such as the Strobe O Flip (what I use with my guitars).

When you use the MS speaker icon in the taskbar (right click) and select "recording devices", is it addressing the D2X card? Does it have "Microphone" visible and can you see if the green bar is moving showing signal input. If you select Microphone (presuming it's there) and select properties do you have input levels.

Your graphics say.. could not find compatible recording speed. I think this translates into sampe rate. Can you set the DX2's sample rate to 44.1 or 48kHz.

Just guessing here.. seems like it should work, I think you're correct about Mic inout, it should be hotter than Line-in. If you show a Mic boost, it might help to activate.

Perhaps so, but it worked very well with my Audigy 2 ZS without any additional amplifier.

I thought that the driver might need to be reinstalled, but I just did that, and the listings that I gave in the last post are still the same now. I'm not certain about most of them, but I know for certain about Stereo Mix, because I tested that to record audio from Hulu shortly after installing the card.

Yeah, I just don't know this device (D2X) well enough to even guess accurately.

One last idea... If you select the Mic and click the properties button, are you presented with a window that has several tabs.

Listen, levels, enhancements, advanced.

If enhancements is there, disable all of the sound effects.
Make sure the sample rate is not something like 96kHz, more like 16-bit 44.1.

Don't know if there's anything else I can offer.

If you get it figured out post back.

Maybe try the AUX input?

I hate to do it, because they are so slow and not very helpful...usually, but I think that I'm going to have to contact Asus about this, because the problem appears to go deeper than a simple configuration setting. Maybe the card has just gone haywire. Something that is confusing to me, is the mention of DirectX in the error window that I attached above. What does sound have to do with DirectX? I know that there is a sound section in it, but I've always considered it more of a video function.

Do you only have the single card in the machine? Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS, correct?

DirectX is also audio, but it's mostly for audio output, DirectX has always been so-so when it comes to recording, in fact I don't think it's used for recording anymore.

Have you tried all the inputs?

Onboard audio is disabled.

DirectX is also audio, but it's mostly for audio output, DirectX has always been so-so when it comes to recording, in fact I don't think it's used for recording anymore.

If that is so, you would wonder why it is mentioned in the error message?

Yes, but there doesn't seem to be much point in continuing that, since it's listed as being currently unavailable in Recording Devices.

Hey seekermeister, sorry to bring up an old thread.

I was wondering if you had fixed the problem you were having with the D2X 500 days ago lol? I have tried both asus and unified drivers but both are coming up the same.
