Solved: ASUS F6ev driver problem after restart

I upgraded an ASUS F6ve from Vista to 7. Windows update installed all drivers without issue. Everything seemed to be working fine until I completed Windows Updates and restarted.

Upon restart, device manager reports two issues, the touchpad, and the video card. The touchpad does not work and the video driver won't allow aero. If I restart again, both the Video and Touchpad work. Restart again, and they don't work. I tried using the drivers listed on ASUS' website, but those have the same problems during restart.

Why would restarting either break or fix the driver issue? Why won't the drivers stick? I called ASUS and they were not helpful.

Thanks.

Solved:
Clean install Win 7
Disable all Windows Updates
Install Vista Drivers for Video and Touchpad
Do not install any Windows Updates

Well the first thing I would do is reinstall the drivers, making sure the machine properly shutdowns and restarts after each.
Drivers are located here, just use the download tab and select win 7 x64.

I tried that, multiple times. Unfortunately, they dont even have the Video driver listed for Win 7. I tried the Vista drivers and that didn't work either.

Why would the driver work, and then after restart, the video card is telling me the video driver isn't working and the touchpad doesnt work? Then after restarting again, both problems get fixed? Its like I'm on a cycle of restart breaking and fixing?

tried that one already. What is weird is that a restart causes a problem in both the VGA and trackpad drivers. What would be the cause of this?

failed installation, bad system ram, error in a windows core file.
You aren't receiving any bsod's though which is usually an indication of one of the first two.
System file check is easy enough. Just run SFC /scannow
It could just be a side effect of upgrading rather than going from a fresh install.
Often makes a mess of drivers.

I did a clean install actually. Just called it an upgrade since the computer had Vista on it before. How do I run the SFC /scannow command?

Might be best off just rolling back the system to before this started happening using system restore at this point. I think the registry entries for the hardware are smoked.

Weird thing is problem only started after Win Update finished all available updates. Prior to that point, I had restarted numerous times without issue

I can't really narrow it down, but as I'm sure has become obvious at this point, you suffered some issues with windows update.
It's apparently caused several seemingly unrelated problems.
I honestly don't have a simple fix for you for this.

Nor can I even tell you which specific update is responsible.
Maybe someone else can be a bit more specific for you.

Just going to do a clean install and then install the ISO of SP1. Hopefully Windows Update won't screw me again.

After installing SP1 the problem occurred again. Apparently there is a Windows Update that is overriding the manufacture drivers for the trackpad and video card. I did another clean install and enabled Windows Update only for the critical security updates. Hopefully that will work. I spoke to a friend of mine who works in IT professionally, and he said this is a common problem with Windows Update, updating drivers and then breaking things.

It was much more common early after release it's generally not so bad now.

Well that didn't sort it actually. I had to disable all Windows Updates, then install the Vista drivers from the ASUS website for the F6ve for both video and touchpad. So far, so good.
