First of all, heres a video - listen carefully please!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPkQzgc5WIw

Issue -

When I built my pc, everything worked fine. No issues, every driver perfect. Long story short I had some issues and had to do a fresh install of windows 7. Then the audio issue above started happening again. So I assumed it was a bad windows install - so I re-installed windows 2 more times and I have had the issue ever since.

If I set my speakers to quadraphonic the noise stops. But the noise still comes through my headphones and it is annoying beyond belief!!!!

I have tried every driver realtek and asus and yet nothing but problems. The default windows driver doesn't have the best quality or else I'd keep using it!

Please help me, if you can fix this I will be forever grateful to you!!!!

P.S. - Asus has no fix for this and wants me to RMA - please prevent me from going through that process.

What am I supposed to hear? I don't hear anything wrong?

I deal with audio every day as I have a recording studio.

You don't hear the extreme distortion once I swap the speakers from quadraphonic to stereo like it's meant to be? Not to mention the high pitch dog whistle like noise?

I listened to it again and can't hear any distortion. Some other music would be a better sample. Something that is not rock or rap, and more cleaner. Maybe Willie Nelson?

Ok now listening to both videos on several devices a lot of people notice this.

I've tried several sets of speakers, several pairs of headphones - the sound is still there.

*edit: once again this issue goes away if I set my speakers to quadraphonic, but I can't do this on headphones and I swap between them quite often.

OK I hear it now.

You say you have tried the generic Windows installed High Definition Audio Drivers (Codec). Is the distortion there too? or just you don't like the quality of the HD Audio Drivers.

If any driver has the distortion, I would say its a hardware problem. I know you don't want the hassle of sending the motherboard in for repair (replacement) but it may be the case.

One thing you can try, before the motherboard repair. You can buy a cheap USB connected recording device and try that. If that works OK that will verify its a hardware problem.

Here is an example of a cheap USB device.

Only the Asus/Realtek driver causes this sound issue. I've tried several versions and am currently using the default windows driver but the quality just isn't as good. Do I need to go buy a cheap sound card?

Edit: running dxdiag shows no problems. Realtek themselves have been no help considering I've tried their drivers also... I truly think this is a software issue, because realtek HD audio manager constantly crashes.

Oh, I missed the part about the generic driver working OK, sorry.

Have you tried the driver direct from Realtek? If not, give that a try. Realtek

Yes I have tried the driver direct from realtek. It's the same driver, just a different overlay.

But yes, direct from realtek theres causes this issue as well.

What power supply do you have? Make and power.

I've seen some postings about distortion and it turned out to be a power supply problem.

OK, that's a good power supply. Some people build systems and use cheap power supplies that can be noisy, poor DC voltage regulation, etc.

The next step is a cheap USB connected sound card to see if the sound is OK or distorted. Will prove whether its hardware or not.

If you have USB headphones that will work. USB Headphones do not use the PC's sound card, they use digital from the PC and convert it to analog audio in the headphones.

The headphones sound like shit also, unless I convert them to qaudraphonic.

They never used to do this ever.

When you did the reinstall, did you do a "clean" reinstall, which involves reformatting (wiping) the hard drive and then install, or did you just install over the existing?

Doing a "clean" install and then testing before installing anything extra is a good test. If its still bad, with the clean install and nothing else installed it would lean towards a hardware issue.
