Asus U30JC - Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device

I received this error on my laptop's old hard drive. I bought a new hard drive, WDBABC3200ANC-NRSN, which is detected in the BIOS. I also purchased a Windows 7 DVD to install on the new hard drive.

However, I still continue to receive the "reboot and select proper boot device" error. I cannot access the Safe Mode screen, it just continues to display the same error. I can access BIOS. I updated BIOS to version 217, but that hasn't changed anything. My priorities are set to the CD/DVD first and the hard drive second, but I continue to receive the same error message.

How can I install Windows 7 on the new hard drive?

It sounds as if you aren't booting from the installation DVD.

I would recommend this:

1. Remove the old hard drive
2. Insert the DVD and boot the computer
3. As the computer boots, keep hitting the ESC key - this will open the one-time boot menu
4. Select the DVD and hit enter

The computer will boot from the DVD and you can then perform the installation.

Hi, I've already removed the old hard drive that came with the laptop and replaced it with the new one.

I inserted the DVD and turned on the computer and pressed ESC like you said. It gave me the "Please select boot device:" menu, but when I selected the DVD it brought me to the same "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" message. Pressing a key just repeats the message.

Any other ideas?

Where did you purchase your installation DVD from? Is it damaged?

I'm a student so I purchased it from our student book store yesterday. Doesn't appear damaged.

Mmm, what concerns me is that you never received a product key with this DVD, so I'm not sure how you could actually validate the installation. Is this store reputable?

OK^. Lets take the DVD out of the equation for now - there is another to do this.

You can boot from a USB drive and install Windows 7 using that.

You will need:

1. A 4GB USB flash drive - the entire USB drive will be formatted in Step 3 (see below)
2. The Windows 7 ISO you want to install
3. The Windows 7 USB Tool to write the ISO into a bootable format on the USB flash drive
4. A Product Key to authorise the installation

On a working Windows 7 computer, insert the USB flash drive, download and install the Windows 7 USB Tool. Open it and browse to the location that you saved the Windows 7 ISO too. Click 'Next' so the ISO is written to the USB drive.



When complete, boot from the USB flash drive using the ESC key to select it from the one time boot menu. Install Windows, then activate it with the product key you received.

There is no reason to buy a new copy of Ultimate since you own Home Premium which came with the laptop and has approx $100 value you'd be wasting by not using it. Unless you actually need Ultimate for one of it's few extra expensive features, you can use Ultimate elsewhere. Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums

To reinstall the licensed version to the new HD follow the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything you need including the latest official Home Premium installer is there to get and keep a perfect install.

I did all that and now I've got a black screen with a blinking white underscore.

I've given it about an hour and it's still a black screen with a blinking white underscore. Not sure where to go from here.

Did you even read my post? You could already be installed with the latest official ISO for your licensed version provided in the tutorial.

I tried that but the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool got all the way through writing it onto the flash drive and then told me that it couldn't find boot sect so it wouldn't work.

Try a new download of the proper iso file, for some reason they are picky and don't work the first time.

It sounds as if the ISO might be bad, or the USB tool didn't work properly - can you try it again?

Tried it again. Same message:

Files copied successfully. However, we were unable to run bootsect to make the USB device bootable.
