AT&T Internet Problems

I have AT&T DSL with filters on all my jacks and I’ve constantly had trouble with losing the connection off and on all day long. This has been going on for over 2 years but AT&T does not show any problems on their lines and a tech came out (August 2013) and didn’t find anything on the lines going to my house. I’ve gone through for 4 or 5 of their Netgear 7550 and Pace 4111N model/routers but nothing fixes the problem. I’ve also had them run a dedicated line to my office where the modem/router is connected but that didn’t help either.

The modem/router is connected to my office PC and then the 4 Ethernet outputs run throughout the house. I have 10 things connected to the router some via Ethernet and some via Wi-Fi but maybe only 5 things are used at a time.

Occasionally the modem/router will loose the IP address of my PC and I will have to reset it and even do the ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew which I learned to do from the AT&T online tech.
Occasionally a phone call will bump our internet and I have to unplug and plug back in the modem/router but this doesn’t happen too often.

When I get on my office PC (always on) every morning and it’s like I have to wake up the internet because it takes forever to load pages or doesn’t load them at all. I have to keep trying to load a page and eventually it will load but can take a minute or so to do this. This kind of goes on throughout the day where it seems to drop the connection and then comes back after 15 seconds or so.
When I’m on the office PC and it does this, it shows it’s connected (90% of the time) and the modem/router always shows connected (all green lights). AT&T says it doesn’t show this dropping on their end and everything is fine so this has been driving me crazy. I have this issue via Wi-Fi but it does seem worse when on my PC.

I’ve read that AT&T’s modem/routers are not very good but if everyone had the issues I’m having I think they would be forced to change equipment so I’m assuming this is a problem isolated to my situation. Right now I’m using their Netgear 7550 but I also have their Pace 4441N as a backup and I can’t tell that’s ones better than the other.

Since I occasionally have to reset the modem/router because of losing the IP address does this sound like a modem/router issue or could this somehow be a PC problem interacting with it? Could this be some software on my PC causing this?

Or does this sound like an interference problem inside the home although you would think my dedicated line would eliminate that possibility?

At some point this year AT&T is supposed to upgrade my town to fiber optic do you think this could solve all my problems?

ATT&T doesn't have a clue what's going on I've lost track how many times I've called them over the last two years and since I live in a small town I have no other internet options.

Very strange problem ya have there. Sounds like there are gremlins in the lines or something lol. But really now; it sounds like its got to be the equipment that att is providing to you. I would try and order a new router(yes i would still stick with netgear though). Even though the ones att has been providing is netgear; still; I would try and get one either locally if you can or order one online. Sounds like att may have possibly gotten a bad batch of routers/modems. Also; you could try the steps in the following link and see if it does anything:

I use Avast Free, Comodo Free Firewall, and Malwarebytes. Just to be clear when I said occasionally lose my IP address it's about once a month. When this does happen is my computer to blame or the modem/router?

Well disabling the Comodo firewall doesn't fix the connection issue so are you sure uninstalling it is necessary?

It's a third party product for troubleshooting purposes it's best to uninstall it,
You can re-install it later if you wish too when the issue is resolved,
Your router has it's own firewall for the network,
Windows has it's own firewall for each system which is good enough and best for troubleshooting,
Cheers.

A problem I had a few years ago.
The lines to the house from the phone company were working as they should.
The lines through the house to the computer and phone were not working properly.
Old lines in the house were not up to todays standards and in poor shape.
I replace the wires in the house up to the phone companies connecting box on the outside of the house and things work as they should.
If it matters I used this cable.

I had AT&T DSL for years.
Suddenly it started getting slow every day around 5 PM, like dialup speed.
Spent a couple of months with every AT&T tech, every suggestion ...
They even had a tech in my home, see the problem, and everything they tested showed there is no problem.
Even when their tech saw the problem first hand and told the other AT&T folks who said there is no problem ...
Then they tried to tell me it's my house wiring - needs to be rewired.
I told them my house wiring does not change at 5 PM, there is no problem during the day, something happens to the network in the evening.
They did some rewiring...no help.

They had put Uverse in my neighborhood about a year earlier.
I finally said OK, change me to Uverse and if the problem is not fixed I'll switch to cable internet.

The tech came to install Uverse and told me "Uverse does not work at your house"!
I asked why and he said something is wired wrong somewhere, we may have to dig up the cabling in the neighborhood.
It ended being something wired wrong in a "Junction Box" with some other specific house in the area.
It wasn't until that house got Uverse that my DSL had problems.

So, while every tech and group within the "DSL Department" may say everything is ok - not our problem,
It turns out there is another "Uverse world" that they seem to know nothing about and can cause DSL problems.

2 cents from down under this happens in this small town to and it is usually old wiring and the time of day one hooks up. Our system here runs through repeaters that are also old and in need of replacing as I don't think we are getting optic in any immediate future.

I tried Netgear and another flop of the provider and eventually got my TP-Link which apart for the occasional reset for ten seconds hasn't missed a beat.

For my money the problem lies in either the provider, modem or the wire attachment.

But I think also that TZ was right in getting the Comodo shut off too.

I've tried new modem/routers numerous times one time I will try their Netgear 7550 and when I get disgusted with it I'll get their Pace 4111N. Changing modem/routers in the past has never fixed the problem.

I've been using the Netgear 7550 since last August replacing a Pace 4111N. I changed at the time because the AT&T tech came to my house and said he couldn't find anything wrong with my line so he just gave it to me. All the other times I've had to buy them but it never makes a difference which modem/router I use.

The Netgear seems to drop my connection or affects my ability to load web pages for up to a minute and then reconnects. The Pace if I remember correctly would drop the connection maybe not as often but when it did would require me to unplug and plug it back in.

Up until a couple of years ago (maybe longer) I had their 2Wire modem/router and had absolutely no problems at all. When they discontinued the 2Wire they replaced it with the Netgear and then started to carry the Pace also. Now the 2Wire was getting pretty dated (dont think it had N) but it was their best modem/router.

Since changing from the 2Wire to their newer modem/routers the only other difference is I have a different PC and we probably have more devices connected.

By the way i uninstalled the Comodo firewall and it made no difference.

Just so I have it right you cable all the house devices?? If so disconnect all but your main machine and see what happens. If the problem remains at least it eliminates the other devices interfering with the net connection. I only ask because e of concerns over how the cabling was carried out.
