ATI Catalyst Control Center crashes Windows 7

Just wanted to give folks a "heads-up" on a problem I've encountered with older Catalyst Center and Windows 7. Installed an older version of the suite (v6.1) because that's the latest my XP-era video card would support.

Got a popup after that complaining about compatibility and shutdown resulted in BSOD.

OK, so went into Control Panel and unistalled CCC. Still get the BSOD.

Went into Control Panel again and tried to uninstall the remaining ATI stuff. Nothing happens.

OK, tried to correct with System Restore. Claims it can't do that due to filesystem errors. Rebooted ran chkdsk, fixed the errors. Restarted, tried again -- same refusal. Same BSOD on shutdown.

Looks like the only "fix" is a complete reinstall. <Sigh>

So ... if you have an older version of ATI drivers you need to install, don't install the CCC. Instead, just expand the drivers and install them separately.

Course, that might faile, too. Haven't done the complete reinstall, followed by the driver reinstall, to find out yet.

Hello Mark,

If you uninstall the driver, do you still get a BSOD? If you remove the CCC, you might leave the display driver itself installed, and that might still cause the BSOD. Also, I'd recommend you to try some custom drivers, such as Omega. These might fix the problems.

Thanks, but I can't get any of the uninstall stuff to work for ATI after uninstalling CCC.

I click the selection, the circle spins -- and then, nothing. What I was hoping to do was simply uninstall all the ATI stuff, reinstall the driver by itself, and see if that worked without the BSOD.

Not aware of the Omega drivers. Are these for older cards (have a Radeon 7200)?

Well ... the machine kept crashing, so I gave up and reinstalled using build 7137 instead, and swapped in a newer (2006) video card -- which works OK with the default drivers. Don't get aero, but when I tried to load the ATI drivers in XP for this card, it said the drivers didn't match the card.

So, for now, I'm leaving it as is.

Hello Mark,

As it's not necessary to reply to your first reply, I'm just going to reply this to your second. I wonder what card you are using, as you are saying it's from 2006, but that should have an option to enable Aero. In 2005-2006 the X1000 series from ATi was released, and these should be Aero-capable.

I'd still be glad to help you to enable Aero if you want, but then I will need some information about the Graphics Card you're using now.

I was mistaken about the card. It was in a AIW 2006 box, but it's really a Radeon 9000 -- to old to handle aero. But, it does do higher resolution without the ATI drivers. So, without aero, there doesn't seem much point in trying to get the ATI drivers working.
