It should boot with default driver but nevertheless, you are right. Best not to take a chance

Now why in heavens name would AMD include chipset drivers on a video driver uninstall?

Man some companies can be totally dumb. :shock:

Unless they have changed it Nvidia does the same thing, as least as far as the uninstaller in Programs and Features goes. Only difference is their uninstaller shows all the Nvidia drivers installed from the get-go,



instead of giving the express or custom options. You still need to pick and choose as the default is to remove everything.

Hi there everyone,

Thanks to everyone's suggestions, I have a Catalyst system that will start up. I still do not have an up-to-date driver, however.

I was unable to remove the CCC application through the Windows software manager and trying to start CCC on the computer caused an error. After seeing what you guys were doing, I started the isntall .exe and chose to uninstall everything. After doing that, I ran the ATI driver-only .exe from the AMD site. Upon restart, I found that I still have no working driver.

Then I started the CCC full .exe and chose to install the CCC app and drivers. Restart still finds me with no working driver. I can however start up CCC. I don't know if this will help me get a display adapter driver, but felt some measure of excitement at the little bit of progress I made.

Is there a way to update the driver through the Catalyst manager? I can't find the install manager, only profiles and preferences.

I've decided to resolve the issue by RTV'ing the laptop and getting a machine with an nVidia display adapter as I have updated the drivers on my other 5 machines without ever once having to resort to the absurd measures that it's becoming clear I need to to do for this card. I had less trouble installing drivers for these cards in the early days of commercial linux

The internet abbreviations are besting me everytime! May be a primitive suggestion,but why don't you just change the Graphics card (unless it's integrated)? I have had an infusion of knowledge about GRAPHICS in this--our site! No doubt at all!

One word, laptop.

schwim hope you don't run into the same kind of updating problems with the new laptop with a Nvidia GPU in it. Depending on which laptop manufacturer it is from (primarily Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic, maybe others), some of them still won't allow for the installation of reference drivers, only drivers that they have modified (and only the INF's and DevID's).

One thing to remember is that only until recently (last couple of years) it didn't matter who the laptop was made by, the only way to get a reference video driver (didn't matter if it was ATI or Nvidia) was to use a modded or modify the INF yourself to get one to install. Your Acer was recent enough that it shouldn't have had the problem but who knows what Acer did as far as the DevID for the video card.

You can "install a driver,at least a Printer driver successfully via a Windows update( xerox laser phaser 3117),as was in my case safely and it saved me from buying A Win.7 compatible Canon laser Mono (110 $) !
