I have "upgraded" my Dell XPS M1730 laptop from XP Pro to Windows 7, but my DVD CD will no longer recognise Audio Discs or DVDs. It will read the Windows 7 installation DVD so there is no mechanical problem with it. I have updated all drivers and the installed driver is listed as current. I have also installed the latest Firmware.
Any help or ideas Please!

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It appears that Dell no longer support your particular model so the only advice I can offer you is a BIOS update, if there is one along with a check of the BIOS settings to see if your optical drive is recognised.

Have you also checked in Device Manager to see what's happening there?

You might also want to consider a clean install of Windows 7 rather than an upgrade.

Thanks,
I have updated BIOS, Drivers and Firmwear, and there are no alerts in Device Manager the System is indicating that everything is ok and up to date but the Drive will still not detect Audio or DVDs. Windows Media Centre and XBMC will not recognise the Drive at all. Windows 7 was a clean install after the Drive was formatted.............I guess I will have to go back to good old tried and tested XP!

I can understand your frustration, but have you considered replacing your optical drive with one that is compatible with Windows 7?

It could be argued that the drive manufacturer should be in a position to release a firmware update to ensure compatibility, but of couse all they are really interested in is selling more hardware.

It just seems a shame that you feel forced to give up on Windows 7 and return to XP.
