I generally clean up after installing a program offline. Early this morning, I had not. When I looked in the temp folder later, I found a couple of folders and logs related to Auslogics Disk Defrag's install that suggested it tried to "dial" out to install "something else" (ask.com toolbar).

During the normal install, there are two offers, ask.com toolbar and another thing which I don't recall. I had unticked them.

Has this been happening all this time despite the unticking?

Depending on where you get the installer, it will "offer" to add the Auslogics toolbar, and the ask.com toolbar. I believe duing installation, the installer does connect to see if you have chosen this option. You may also find an exe in the Auslogic folder with the ask icon similar to this:

Ask.jpg

And possibly, an apnstub.exe

apnstub.jpg

Such as these from my Avira folder. The apnstub.exe is what attempts to call out on an Avira install.

Yes, the two folders and logs had "apn" in the name and contents. Thank you.

With the install offline and CCleaner clearing the temp folder, I hadn't notice the odd behavior of dialing out despite the user, me, choosing to opt out of the offers.

More and more legit programs are adding these installers. As long as unticking them actually prevents their install, I can't complain as they are free. A Guy
