automatic volume variations

Like Radio stations, my computer will automatically adjust the volume of any sound(namely music) so that it's not particularily high or low.

Many people would enjoy something like this, but for me it's incredibly annoying. The music I listen to sometimes has extreme ups and downs, lots of variation in volume, which I like. It's all melded into a singular, bland volume level with whatever's doing this. Whatever's automatically adjusting the sound volume on my computer needs to die!

I could not find anything under the settings for my "Realtek High definition Audio" driver related to this.
There are a couple other "High definition Audio Controllers" in System Devices that I don't think have any relation.
My computer is HP, could it be some program that HP installed along with a bunch of other crap?
I can't think of anything else!
I search and I search but I can't find what's causing my sound volume to automatically change.

Can anyone help?

re: Extreme ups & downs... Oh, you mean the lost art of "Dynamics" :sarc:

Right click on the MS speaker icon in the task bar, select "Playback Devices".

Select the device with the green check mark, probably "speakers".

Select "Properties" at the bottom right, select the Enhancements tab. Scroll down the list of enhancements... to "Loudness Equalization" uncheck it.

Also, if you back up to the Playback Devices.. there's a tab named Communucations. Set it to "Do Nothing".

This is something in Windows Media Player that I'm trying to figure out. I only just started noticing this the other day actually. Loudness Equalization is unchecked and the problem is still occurring.

I have a feeling it's with that Dolby Digital nonsense that you can't seem to turn off anywhere.

I understand your problems. Not HP here, though, so the problem must be somewhere else.

I too cannot pass a certain level of volume and drawing the knobs up will just get me a terrible clipping: the high volume is frozen, the low volume is increased. Leading to the "constant" volume and messing up badly with music.

I more recently dual booted on XP out of trial, and the sound was perfect. It sure has to do with Windows 7.

I've searched hell for everything volume related and this one is new or me.

I'm experiencing issues on my whole system, so it may be that this Dolby thing is bossing the volume control somewhere other than inside Media Player only.

It's more than likely a driver issue though. I've got a delta 44 and studio monitors and I can blast the hell out of my ears if I want to

Nice and clear at any reasonable volume level in the mixer.

There may still be some things about new multi mixer system in Windows 7 that some manufacturers have not completely grasped or something...

Simply in the speaker properties... doh!

I guess I figured that I've had these speakers for several years, on three computers, so it the problem must be in something else.
