Okay so up until last year i was using AVG 8.5 and then swapped to MSE. AVG 8.5 used to scan my whole PC in about 50mins and same with MSE. One day i tryed avast and it did it in 20mins. I then stuck with MSE and now i don't really want it. So i decided i would try the new AVG 9.0 it scaned my whole computer of 291480 items in about 13 mins... I dunno if i should trust it because it scans so fast. Don't bother saying go with Avast or MSE or some other thing

The scanning speed of Avast and MSE may be slow but the detections rates are higher than AVG.

Well to be honest... I don't like how MSE use windows update and i hate how if you miss a scan it wont update it virus database, or even do the scan. I don't like the asvast look.... and tbh the only good thing i like about AVG is that if u miss a scan it does it at next start up because im always at school and there is never really a good time to set it... so bascially set it for 12.00pm and do it when i evetnually get on PC. Plus my brother is more experiecited with AVG and yea.

You can make MSE check for updates before performing a scheduled scan. Just check your settings. Is it really that hard to click the "Update" button?

After getting 6 systems of my computer club infected despite AVG being installed, I would not touch it any more. MSE is not bad (I use it myself) but NIS2010 is the ultimate (I have that on 2 systems).

So are you judging anti virus software just by their scanning speed? If yes, go with Norton. It'll quick scan your system in less than 2 mins.

The question is whether AVG is doing a quick scan or a full scan. I would make sure the settings are right. I just removed AVG 9.0 from my dads computer because the computer got incredibly slow, and after the screen saver came on and you tried to use the computer again, everything on the desktop was gone. I did a scan with MBAM. 1 trojan, 2 adware, 1 spyware, and a bunch of little stuff AVG left behind, including files and and registry entries. I'll agree with MSE not doing the scan if it misses the time it is supposed to. I also always change the settings to start the scan even if the computer is not idle. Also, it takes all of three or four clicks to start the scan manually.

I think as far as scanning is concerned it is anyhow better to use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. And then, what does the lenght of the scan matter. Let it run in the background and do other things in the meantime. As long as you do not perform video editing or alike, it will not be in the way.

If you wish to use AVG 9 I would recommend you do use it.
AVG is a good, trustworthy program & offers multiple layers of protection.
It's faster, smarter security that won't slow your computer down.

AVG 9.0.851 is installed here on three laptops. I am very happy with it & see no valid reason to change.

Please let us know what you decide to do.

I ditched AVG after their version 7 or 8, I think - the one that came with the link scanner, which insisted on scanning each link's webpages, effectively trying to scan the Internet through my PC. AVG slowed my respectable system to a crawl, where an old Celeron started (without any AV - not connected to Internet) outperforming it in normal usage. It also is lax in detections (a nasty autorun virus/trojan easily got past it) and preventions. Their support forum is really quite terrible, where canned replies of uninstall, download the latest installer and re-install are only given as solutions. This was so like Norton/McAfee that I had to think about alternatives. AVG were quite good till v6 - very lightweight unobtrusive AV.

I have switched to avast and MBAM, since last couple of years and so far (touch wood) have been quite happy. I have left the default Windows Defender running though, just in case, since it does not seem to conflict. Avast recent v5 is much better than their v4 too.

I believe the key is not in any scanning but as in prevention. The AV must catch the web page/e-mail/USB stick/CD/DVD at the time, BEFORE it has any chance to do anything. I think avast does this quite well. This is where IMO AVG/MSE tend to fall short. I had a laptop with MSE, but it still allowed a trojan through. A scan by it found it but it could not fix it. But MBAM did in a jiffy.

I do not even bother to scan my PC more than once a month.

A new Dell laptop with McAfee improved at least perceptibly by 20% after removing McAfee and installing Avast.
