You're welcome Bligh, what persistence are you talking about? Just curious.

I get updates like everyone one else but nothing persistently trying to actually do anything.

This is about as aggressive as I have seen so far,

But I have to click on the GWX icon to see that.

I do a manual check for updates every morning just after I start the computer, mainly to get the latest MSE updates.

From what others have said MSE updates on it's own you don't need to manually check for updates for it,
If it's that worrisome switch to Panda it updates on it's own so you have one less item to do in the morning

Yes MSE updates on it's own, but I have got into the habit of checking for updates first thing everyday. This probably goes back to when I was using other AV programs that needed a daily update.

This should not be needed--I have several computers, both XP and W7, that use MSE and I never touch this. They update automatically in the background.

Dunno what could be causing it but something is amiss with your MSE installation.

There is nothing wrong with my MSE, I repeat, there is nothing wrong with my MSE. I just do the updates first thing in the morning from habit, if a newer update come through during the day it updates automatically.

I rest my case.

Habits are hard to break. was the point in referring back to the previous posts Lady suggested and add a task using task manager instead.

Hmm I don't think so unless you've changed a setting--it will update again 24 hours later. Maybe not. Whatever.

If we're really paranoid (and most of us here are!) we set a Task Scheduler task to "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate" at every logon. Then we wonder what our PCs are doing with themselves (checking for updates! of course!) when we try to get them under control.

Find that the best way to remove annoying thing from Windows is to run a Linux live cd, and browse the hard drive for any files you want to get rid of. There is nothing Windows can do about that, everything is magically allowed to be modified. [emoji3]
