I've got an xp virtual machine running I'm going to install cod4 o that and check the performance. I would sacrifice xp any day if it meant giving up a few games untill the official release because the improvements in windows 7 far outweight the losses.

Good grief! I've had more fun running older games on 7 then Vista since you can't actually see them installed! Some outdated dvd burning software went right on 7 with the new troubleshoot compatibility option in the right click menu not seen in Vista.



On the other hand I still have to wait and see if Vista or 7 software updates are seen once 7 is out since any older addon devices sadly lacked anymore then Vista driver updates while the application side continues to suffer! At least 7 will have one other advantage seen over both Vista and XP being far more "64bit driver support"!

I am already on XP x64 But on WMVare is Windows 7

That's one way to do it since 7 is still in it's own development anyways! I think you'll find that moving up out of the 64bit XP into the 64bit 7 will be what you want later however since that sadly lacked a much needed driver support.

With 7 still being a Beta, even if it's by far the most stable beta I've ever used, I still keep my Vista install just down the drive...
Thank Gawd for multiple large drives! If I wanted I could have every OS since 1 installed and have room to spare (John, I have 3.1..somewhere if you want), but I have not had a single BSOD or major (knock on wood) failure with 7 yet.

One weird thing I have going on now with my new Logitech MX 5500 Combo, after a few hours of use I get weird characters when using shift+x keys and I need to reboot to get the driver straightened out. Check this out..this is supposed to be the question mark..É, this is the quote..È, backslash..É, forward slash..À....AARGHH!!

Is that an illuminated or wireless combo?

I was seeing problems at times in XP and Vista as well as 7 with a newer usb keyboard+mouse combo where the solution was to add a hub on for it. All the usb ports are still in working order while some of these tend to pull down on the bus after awhile.

As far as I know, RCT1 DOES run on XP :O
And well, I only have 160GBs of Hard drive space, so I gotta watch it.
No dual-boots for me.
And well, I don't play much else than Lineage 2, except for Shin Megami Tensei.

C'mon dude. I have a 160GB HardDrive in my craptop and I dual-boot =)

As far as I know, RCT1 DOES run on XP Tensei.

just to clear this up a bit, correct it eventually does run on XP, but you have to patch for it to run from their site...

But at first, just like here with 7, RCT would not run... so read my first post again... all for one game? even be that there is probly a fix for most all games in the works/pipeline

One thing I was trying to explain before was seeing more stuff actually running on 7 but not on Vista that was written for XP or even older! Burning software written specific for XP now working on 7.

The 7000 build was especially touchy at first simply getting things to install and then later again using the troubleshooter to see them run. Other things like the addon devices worked liked I was still in XP or Vista!

All this was on the 32bit 7 however while most things tried so far except the IE connection by way of usb adapter or external cable modem refuse to see the drivers work for those.

yes, i will have to agree alot with that statement.

this is a plus for the proXP antiVista ppl like myself... and well, i have just stuck to 7000 and have down pat for most part, and not a whole lot is going to change from 7000 to where i will be totally lost on a new OS. I Will hopefully be pleasantly suprised when it DOES happen

The latest 7077 saw a large improvement over the 7000 showing some interesting progress since the 7000 there. I have a feeling the RC once out will actually have a few pleasant surprizes in store.

With the 7077 finally seeing the capability of recording video with the tuner card here XP is ancient history once the finished 7 is out! Gee then I can dual boot Vista with 7 on one drive and create a nice array with the two others leaving the 4th for storage. That would work nicely!!!

Once the software side of things finally comes along not seen with Vista I expect XP will simply wane to past memories rather fast. .................

probably not as fast as some would like.

There's a HUGE amount of Professional legacy hardware out there still in daily use and serviceable for many years. For a lot of this stuff the manufacturer is no longer in business or simply won't bother with new drivers because the hardware is either "Too Old", "Obsolete" or more usually "Replaced with a newer model with more features".

This stuff is quite expensive -- I'm talking here about "Plotters", CAD Blue print drawing equipment, TASCAM PRO MiniDisc recorders, High end negative Film scanners, Professional Recording Studio equipment etc etc. This gear isn't in the typical consumer range and often costs 1000's of dollars, euros, roubles, Kronor etc etc.

It's very easy sometimes when logging on to Forums like these which are for the most part read by home hobbyists so they might be isolated from this type of equipment - but in the wider world it's often not realized exactly how much "Eseoteric High end Hardware" there IS out there -- and this stuff can't be replaced like "your 35 GBP printer won't work under W7 -- go and buy a new one".

A lot of this stuff could still be around (and functioning) in 20 years time.
Fortunately this type of gear usually works on XP Virtual machines - but don't expect XP to disappear any time soon whatever the merits of W7.

XP will outlast VISTA by at least 2 generations I'd suspect.

The fact that XP stuff in a large variety is working on 7 for the 32bit side at least while Vista wouldn't the same from XP shows the 32bit 7 is the one that will be the one to see multiple generations as the last 32bit OS from MS. If you want see older versions still running you still have old Fat16/NT networking still in use as well as people still running 9x!

Since about 50% of the MS growth comes through office products leaving Windows to the other 50% there companies seeing regular periodic upgrades separate office from shop. In manufacturing the orders go out to dept. heads from current OSed/softwared equipment to existing boat anchors sitting on a foreman's desk. But those are network editions going from NT, 2000 Pro, XP Pro in some applications, Server 2003, 2005, Server 2008 on it's way often seen there not the desktop editions.

Even for the average consumer when a new version comes out your typical dial-up modem sees what? Builtin driver support as the upgrade or fresh install of Windows detects a modem that's been around for some time seeing drivers for that or generic substitutes used.

What 7 is seeing over Vista however is more backward support for XP drivers otherwise the tv tuner card in use here for one item would be history real fast. Until lately XP had it's clear cut purpose mainly for things not supported in Vista but suddenly supported in 7. Besides I could use the XP drive for beta testing 8 in a few years with 7 being the main OS!
