Hi.

I have recently installed Backtrack 5 kde with unetbootin.

originally i wanted to install Backtrack on different drive than win7 but since unetbootin wont let me i had to install it on the same one

when choosing to unetbootin in the boot menu i end up with a message that ubnldr.mbr is missing or corrupt, status 0xc0000098

I have tried using EasyBCD to solve this but no luck

If I'm not mistaken, unetbootin is a tool for installing Backtrack to a USB flash drive. I am surprised it let you install it to the local hard disk. You've likely written over part of your Windows 7 installation, as well as having messed up the MBR.

You could try using a Windows 7 install disc. Just boot from CD, and instead of installing, select Recovery Options or similar. You'll want to open a command prompt from the next dialog, and run:
Code:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
I still am very surprised unetbootin allowed you to do this. It seems like it would have detected an NTFS file system and realized flash drives don't use FAT, but I suppose external HDD's use NTFS. I don't know if unetbootin wouldve deleted the partition and written over it (in which case the above command won't fix the issue), or if it wouldve just written over the Windows files at the start of the drive (in which case the above command might get your machine to where Windows tries to load, but almost certainly fails), or if it wouldve written to free space on the partition (in which case, you sir are very lucky). Not to be grim, that's just my honest assessment of the situation.

Sorry. Post back with the results; depending on what exactly unetbootin did, you may still be able to recover some if not most of your files.
