Backup DVD format fails

Why is it trying to format a DVD? Why don't it just write to it?

I to would like to know the answer to this as i cant get the backup feature in windows 7 to work when using blank media.
Backing up to an external hard drive works without a problem.

Its just one thing after another with this windows 7 and i spend more time fixing windows software than actually using it.

Thinking of switching away from windows.

Not sure of exactly what kind of blank media (assume DVD), but I know I, and several others in this forum have mentioned that a system image on a DVD cannot be made; it freezes.

Well that just tops it all, what a joke the backup feature is.

Starting to lose my patience with windows 7.

backup stops at 56%. I let it run for a couple hours, and it made no more progress. FAIL!

I tried to put my backup on several 4gb CD's. It froze, and finally, I had to perform a hard shut down.

For further information, MS indicates that you CANNOT use a flash drive, either.

I tried on 4GB DVD, no progress either. Wouldn't allow me to eject the disc either after canceling.

I've lost interest in the feature that didn't work.

I've got Nero 9, but haven't really had the patience so far to experiment with all of the features in it.

Win7 backup images are best stored on an external.

It takes about 6 DVD's to make the average image anyway.

ha, to heck with that. I'd rather start fresh than do with the ways they used to back in the days of backups with floppies.

What on earth's the point of DVD backups on an OS whose footprint is way over the capacity of even dual-layer DVD media? Use a separate hard drive, whether it's one inside your PC, external, within another PC on your network, an NAS, whatever... and whilst you're mulling it over do yourself a favour and get Acronis TrueImage 2010

Do you get a WinPE recovery cd with Acronis, or does it only come if you buy the extra plus -pack?
