I have tried 3 times backing up my system to an external HD I have. Each time, it gives me an error saying it failed. I also see an error code: 0x81000015

The strange thing is I have backed up to this HD previously with no problems and now it's not working. :(

The HD has a capacity of 500 GB and currently has 225 GB free. I have cleared out all the backup related information off it and try again and it fails as it gets towards the end of the backup process.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Using the windows facilities for any kind of backup (files or images) is nothing but a headache. I recommend to use some program that performs well and does not give you a headache each time. Because backing up with windows does not really mean that you can ever recover that stuff.

It is best to use a good third party application for backing up and in this I fully agree with whs.

I have used Acronis TrueImage for years without any problem. There are many other equally good programs like Acronis out there that can also produce similar results.
