Basic to Home Premium Upgrade: First failed, then succeeded.

I have a Lenovo S10-3t, which came with Windows 7 Home Basic installed. I bought an anytime upgrade to Home Premium. I started the upgrade, but it said that I must first activate System Restore. The system restore configuration menu had two Drives C:\ with one labelled "missing". I disabled restore on it and this drive disappeared; the other one then had restore switched on automatically, so I proceeded with the installation. After about 10 minutes, I got the message that the upgrade was not successful. After clicking close, I restarted the system. It said that it was upgrading. Once it rebooted, it upgraded further, and then rebooted again. Finally, it booted into Home Premium's welcome screen.

The system properties shows that it is indeed Home Premium. Aero and Tablet Input are working fine.

Has it happened with someone else? Do I need to worry about the system being broken in any way?

Thanks for posting, because interestingly, a similar thing happened to me.

I bought a Windows Anytime Product key to upgrade from Windows 7 Professional to Ultimate and ran the upgrade.

The upgrade failed - so it said - so like yourself I restarted my computer to try again. As it started the shutdown procedure the upgrade kicked in and updated my system.

On completion I checked in system properties and sure enough it indicated I was now using Windows 7 Ultimate. To prove it I encrypted my drives with Bitlocker, which succeeded.

So, to answer your query: you do now have Windows 7 Home Premium and your system is not broken. It appears to be a glitch that Microsoft need to sort out, so I think I'll do some investigating and see what I can come up with.

In case you weren't aware, the anytime upgrade just downloads the files needed to convert your system to the new version.

I had updated my system to Service Pack 1 before the Anytime upgrade. Was your system running SP1?

Yes, it was, and I suspect it was probably that which caused the problem.

It might be worth notifying Microsoft of the problem.

Microsoft instructs us to uninstall SP1 and then try again. But, do you think it is necessary?

Personally, I don't think so.

The upgrade installs itself on a restart, which a lot less trouble than uninstalling SP1, installing the upgrade files, and then re-installing SP1.

If I was you, I'd just put it down to a slight annoyance and leave things as they are. If you now create a system image backup you won't have to worry yourself about the problem again. Just re-install the backup if ever you need to.

change windows 7 basic to windows 7 premmium

i am using windows 7 home basic and i want to change it to windows 7 premium.i heard that if i change it to windows 7 premium then my assist option will not take backup...can i know whether it is true or not...and if not true i want to know how to make it work properly..pls someone help to come out of this problem....and also i want to know will there be any other problems if i same my os from windows 7 basic to windows 7 premium....
