Best Codec Pack for Windows 7

Shark007,
Is it not ok to disagree with the "Great Master Shark?"

we can agree to disagree but why do you recommend to people to install the xiph codecs?
Do you enjoy destroying other peoples systems as well as your own?

For your convenience, and review, I have attached a list of known issues with the current xiph releases.

Just this morning i sent my uncompiled scripts to Avast for review.

It is common for AV companies to flag executables from
AutoIt v3 - Automate and Script Windows Tasks - For Free!
and this has been an ongoing issues for several months already.

Many companies have fixed their detection methods but a few such as Nod32 (eset.com)
and now Avast continue to flag my files.

Before you get all excited about codec packs, you might want to read this ( Why Codec Packs Are Bad :: How-To Geek Wiki ). I know the author myself and he always struck me as being very knowledgeable in the matter of codecs.

Finding people that dislike codec packs is not a difficult task.

maybe tmp and whs can team up and solve all your playback issues in a single thread somewhere.
From what i read, all you have to do is install haali and everything will play. good luck with that.
They can take turns destroying other peoples systems and then apply for jobs at k-lite.

I really did not want to start a flame war on the subject. I know too little myself about the intrinsic details of Codecs to argue the subject. But the man who wrote the article is an MVP on the matter and I always gave good advice. Besides, I had my own problems with codec packs and since I uninstalled them, there is peace in the box.

A reasonable approach would seem to be get your system running in vanilla mode, then add good tweaks and see if there are any negative effects.

I got my three systems up and going, then added in Irfan for pictures ONLY - no problems. Added in Shark007's codecs for video - no problems. YMMV with either one. If you have a problem, drop back. Try to stay within the parameters of the system. More ways to do something is not always a good thing.

A last thought - The article seemed to pick on K-Lite more than others, and alluded to using "old" or "illegal" codecs as well as difficulties setting parameters. Neither applies to Shark's stuff.

Bottom line for me - Shark's codecs work for me on three Windows 7 32 bit systems and I would recommend them.

It seems like codec packs are like AV/firewall solutions - everybody has a favorite, some work better than others for different folks.

Expert opinions are still just that - opinions. A close reading of the article will show that his main objection to codec packs is a lack of attention to detail by the builders.

Shark isn't selling anything, and he started this as a way of helping friends with stuff he had built for himself, according to his site. If his stuff has a problem, he jumps on it. That's pride of ownership. Give it a shot, and know that if you have a problem, he will try to help - personally.

FWIW - I've never met Shark, I only know him by his passion for his work.

Fair enough. I am sure Shark does a fine job. But I don't need codecs. If I have something that does not fit, I convert it with Format Factory. Works for me. But usually my stuff is not exotic. I like to keep things simple.

And shark? You say xiph.org is gonna destroy my system? How and by doing what?

The current xiph.org installers wipe out a portion of WMP's registry which destroys the open dialog of WMP and uninstalling the xiph codecs does not fix it. The fact that you dont know it is doing this is just more proof how lame your analysis of anythng codec related is.

As for the rest of your rant, pull you head out of the clouds. Maybe back off on the coffee.

your points 1,2,3,4 document nothing but your own inability to properly come to a conclusion. Please go on though, I could use more useless input from you. This time, please make an effort to substantiate the issue with some proof other than your own dreams.

My codecpack didnt destroy your system, you destroyed it yourself.
And your lack of knowledge continues to destroy other peoples systems.

Dont you find it odd that thousands of people use my codecs without issue,
but YOU needed to wipe out a harddrive?

Do the math, and lick you own, you can probably reach em. :bozone

Thats some really fast re-action from Avast.
I only sent them my scripts a few days ago.
Or did you have to set an exception to allow my software to be ignored?
