Unless you are looking for reproducible colour that is correct for professional printing I think that this is a subjective thing. you can try to obtain a profile from the device manufacturer which will be their ideal, or you can use a generic Microsoft profile, which will be microsoft's "ideal". You can of course use software to set up the settings you prefer and save this as an ICC profile, all of these are in their own way the best profile.

I find that for a HDTV monitor I set up the system to use the generic profile, and then use the device menu to set it to "Photo" mode, I then use the built in windows wizard to tweak these settings to the "ideal"

I do a lot of photo editing and find that this gives me what I need, but if I were to go along the printing route i would probably purchase a hardware based color matching system to build a profile for my and/or the external lab's printer profile.

One thing to remember with using a TV as a monitor, If colour fidelity is important to you you must keep the room ambient lighting constant, (and by the way switch off any built in light sensor in the TV)

Yes that's to be expected, the HDMI Processor used in the device will produce a different profile to that produced by a VGA connection, Unless, as I said before, you have a particular need need for true accuracy of colour I would use the device controls and the Windows (or your Graphics card's), adjustment options to set it to how you like it.

A TV is not designed for critical colour matching and it will drift over time, the specialist pro monitors will not drift, (as much), but will cost a significant amount more ;)

Also don't do any setting work immediately after you switch on, devices take an hour or so to actually settle

I use HDMI as It's easier, ( the in-built 5.1 sound is a major reason), but as always it's a case of what you are happier with, of course it's likely that a TV designed for general use will have more work put into the HDMI than the VGA, by the manufacturers :)
