Solved best hdd for laptop

Hello nfs mate as far as I am concerned can't go past Samsung or Crucial and try make it a 120GB nate that size is very small unless you just intend it for booting it up.

i just need it for saving documents, autocad, and simple gaming i think that would be enough...got a tight budget

I also suggest 120-128GB instead of 60GB, even for an OS and program only drive. SSDs need at least 20-25% unused space on them for best operation and longest life. 30GB simply isn't enough and 60-64GB would be very marginal at best.

As far as what brand to get, the Samsung 840 Pros are generally considered the best. However, the Samsung EVOs have been making a good showing and would be a good, more economical choice.

Edit: we cross-posted. If it's going to be your only drive in your machine, even 120-128GB is going to be hard pressed to meet your needs, if it can at all. You would be much better off saving up for a 250-256GB SSD. If your machine is down and you need something NOW, you would be better off getting a conventional HDD for now and saving for the better and bigger SSD later. You will be much happier with the results in the long run.

I don't do much with mine either but have had to upgrade to 256GB drives for the main machines already. The Samsung EVO is cheaper and I think better than the Pro to be honest. The Crucials and Corsairs are good though. I have a SanDisk Extreme in my laptop and it is pretty good it has the Sandforce controller in it and I guess though they have fixed the bugs a bit now I was lucky with mine.

But really I would stick with the Samsung.

The Samsung EVOs are led expensive than the Pros, are competitive with other brands pricewise, and have been getting good reviews. One reason I recommend the Samsungs is that they use their own controller which is far superior to the Sandforce and Marvel controllers most of the other brands use. The Samsungs also come with their own software, Magician, that help make setting up the SSD much easier and has also gotten good reviews.

ahahah...the other reason want to change hdd to ssd...bec i always move my laptop 1 place to another so i think hdd is getting damaged....now my hdd is having some problems like doesnt detected slow boot ups...and keeps saying no operating system found...so i decided to replace it with a ssd to be safe

I've had three netbooks and, now, a notebook and I still have the HDDs from the netbooks, all of which test and work just fine. It takes some serious knocking about to damage a laptop type HDD; generally, that much impact will damage something else as well, such as the display. Still, an SSD is more robust than a HDD.

However, for what you will use your machine for, I still feel you would be better off getting a decent HDD for now—the Western Digital Blues are pretty good and reasonably priced—and saving up until you can afford a SSD larger than 120-128GB. Your OS, games, and programs will pretty much fill up a 60-64GB SSD and be hard pressed to maintain that 20-25% headspace I mentioned earlier; all this before putting any data on it. Even a 120-128GB will get what little space it has left for data eaten up pretty quickly. If you don't maintain that 20-25% headroom, SSDs will wear out faster due to the added number of rewrites needed for TRIM to do its thing and will also start to run slower. You can always use the HDD later for a backup drive after you replace it with a SSD.

These days, with 120-128GB SSD's being the norm.......you can usually get one close to the same price as a smaller drive. Some manufacturers don't even make a 60-80GB SSD anymore! Get the biggest you can afford, even if you have to save up for it, and instead of eating out, make a sandwich lol. I also recommend Samsung, as the fine folks above me pointed out, they make their own controller......hell, they make everything inside the SSD, the controller, the Nand, the whole shebang. Samsung is the Gold Standard in reliability in the SSD market, and in my opinion, have been for a couple of generations.

I used a Momentus XT 2nd gen for a long time and it was fast for a HDD. Much faster then the WD Black 7200 rpm. But I now own a Samsung 340 Pro 256 gb man does it fly. I just bought another. They run $214 shipped and you may find a special on them. They are of better quality then the Evo. I will be keeping this notebook so that's what sold me on the Pro.

I think you mean a 840 trucking guy and the EVO mate well it is horses for courses and for the tiny bit extra and I mean tiny in the 840 Pro the EVO is way more value.

nfs what is your budget and your laptop model? and you should see if your internal ports are sata 3 or 2 that will make a speed difference with the ones like a 840 pro or evo in play.

Yep t some extent rvc but I have rited several brands in the laptop and really the speed over a spinner more than compensates for whatever the laptop can handle.

yeah i know i'm just saying an evo would probably be as fast as a pro at that point. although in theory the MLC nand of the pro will last longer but not much longer.
