Shark 007 Codec Pack for playback is great (shark007.net) and using that with WMP 12 will get you playing pretty much everything. As far as converting, Roxio is good though I'm not too knowledgeable on that part of it.

First install the 7 codecs and then the x64 components add-on. Also, if you ever do have to upgrade the pack, ensure you uninstall the x64 add-on first and then the 7 codecs.

I'm not sure if these will run on 64 bit, but it wouldn't hurt to check them out.....

I use Fast Video Converter Pro. I got it for free when they were offering a special, now it's like 24$ but it does convert everything quickly to any format. (music and DVD)

Holiday, Buy Fast DVD Ripper, Buy Fast Video Converter.

For free audio burning/converting software, you can try CDex

CDex | Open Source Digital Audio CD Extractor with more than 38,000,000 downloads

For free Video burning, try DVDFlick, it's freeware, a couple years old but does a good job of converting files to DVD for most formats, has lots of options (although limited Menu screens).

(NOTE: The program runs best when compatibility is set to XP Serv Pack 3)

I have one word for K-Lite: CRAP! Any time I've tried K-Lite on any system I have from a clean install, usually stuff goes haywire. As far as converters go, you have Roxio and that's pretty good as a converter. It depends on what you're converting for that an encoder can be recommended but as I said, Roxio is a good general purpose encoder, the upcoming version of Windows Live Movie Maker looks promising. Also Sony Vegas is very good, I've heard good things about VirtualDub as well (though I have no cluse how to use it).

Really, the codec pack plus WMP 12 is enough for most anything. In rare cases when a file won't play, I'll use VLC and in even rarer cases where even VLC won't take it, GOM. I recommend this because I prefer to have just one player for most my media and have a just in case player if something fails.

One word for Real Player - NO! If anything, install Real Alternative ... actually, after some research, it seems Real Alternative is gone. The only reason I would recommend installing Real Player is if you absolutely have to play some media that is in Real Media format, otherwise, avoid it.

So you are saying 7 codecs + GOM Player+VLC player+Real Alternative?

by the way here is the link for Real Alternative:
Free-Codecs.com :: Download Real Alternative 2.0.2 : Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player

Yeah, you must have found a mirror that I couldn't find. But yeah, 7 Codecs plus WMP 12 generally does it. Keep VLC and GOM around as just in case players and Real Alternative to play any Real Media files you encounter in WMP 12.

Yepperz, I have GOM player and I like it.

It not plays almost anything, but it has features like sound/picture capture and advanced functions for viewing.

If you try to play something on GOM & it doesn't have the codec, it goes out & looks for it.
