Just say a starter edition on technet as well as Basic editions of Windows 7, I really like the sound of the Starter Edition however it removes too many of the GUI goodies I so love. Aero and more.

So I was looking at the starter edition of Windows 7 for my Atom 270 netbook. It would allow Aero and a few more tweaks. However does anyone know if these will allow network (home) connections so I can share a drive off my desktop and install CD's through the share?

Does anyone have a full break down of plus and minus features per build?

Ultimate, just kill the transition effects (show contents when dragging, animation for menus/etc)

The features between home/pro/ultimate will not affect perfomance, their just extra options.

That's a good question. I have just installed the "Starter Edition" of the RC on an old laptop as a project, and all of the network functions are intact. I have an issue with finding a PCMCIA or USB device for Ethernet for this old machine (the wireless card only half works) but it does connect with my home network. Now, I also would like to know if I can share a DVD drive off the home network with the laptop? It will be sometime (2 weeks?) before new hardware arrives to complete Ethernet connection, so I will have to wait to answer this question.

Hi
Can you let us know how you get on, as my mums laptop is now pretty old (did struggle slightly with XP) and so I installed Kubuntu on it, as I thought this was my only option. If it isn't, that would be great news.

I'll recommend you Ultimate with vlite if you have some experience there, if not, still Ultimate with many Windows Features turned off.

I have an MSI Wind U100 (2GB RAM, 160GB HD). Are you saying that Ultimate will work as well as Basic?

Please clarify.

Thanks.

JMO I can't see spending as much for the OS as you probably spent for the netbook. So Unless your familiar with the vlite as suggested and money is no option, go with that. Otherwise I would think Home Premium would satisfy your needs, since it is just a netbook. I'll duck now. Fabe

No reason to duck. I don't even know what vlite is, so Ultimate is out. My main concern is that a netbook has the power and capacity to run Home Premium. You're suggesting that it does? Without having to minimize its benefits?

Thanks.

netbooks will run fine with home premium. I have no idea why the manufacturers are putting starter on the netbooks other than price. Home premium runs well and allows you to still have all the goodies, as well as changing the wallpaper! :O

It will default to Aero off if it can't run it, otherwise about all the Services that can be shut off (that aren't already on fast trigger manual) are Tablet PC and Offline Files, maybe Defender tho it is worth its weight.

You can regain some performance by editing the graphics effects as suggested, turning off Indexing and running a lightweight AV like Avast free home with only Defender and Firewall.

I tried vLiting Ult down to half the size and found it made no difference except size. It pretty much adapts to the hardware until you get below 1ghz which it will reject and 528mb which will hobble it some.

Much appreciated.

That reminds me there is an 84 wallpaper collection from a dozen different national Ultimate editions, popular download earlier in the year.

Everyone who sees them say they are the most awesome pictures ever taken. Quite a slideshow, still gaga to this day :p.

Netbooks are rubbish. You can build a better laptop with a barebones chassis. It won't work well with too many apps open.

I disagree. Netbooks serve a very specific purpose. In our case, our MSI is small enough to fit on our kitchen counter and enables my wife and I to check our email, access the Internet, and do basic MSOffice work.

The Sylvania G Netbook that I use isn't exactly top-of-the-range, and runs Windows 7 Home Basic without problems, with the exception that the 10/100 wired LAN doesn't work. Small issue really, as I can use the built-in wireless to get what I need from the network. But because I use Jade for work purposes, I need to be able to access wired networks when visiting customers, so I run Windows XP on there instead.

I suppose for most, Windows Home Basic on a netbook will do fine. If your chosen netbook includes supporting graphics hardware for Aero, then Windows 7 Home Premium should be a good choice. Anything more than that is nothing more than a waste of money.

Yes, but why would you pay for that? You can't really do anything else.

How can I tell if my MSI Wind U100 "includes supporting graphics hardware for Aero?"

If it has a standard Intel 945 chipset or thereabouts it will work. Download HWInfo32 and look in my sig for details on using it.
