Best version of Windows 7 for Netbook?

Netbooks are rubbish. You can build a better laptop with a barebones chassis. It won't work well with too many apps open.

I disagree. Netbooks serve a very specific purpose. In our case, our MSI is small enough to fit on our kitchen counter and enables my wife and I to check our email, access the Internet, and do basic MSOffice work.

Yes, but why would you pay for that? You can't really do anything else.

Simple. Because it meets our needs at a very low price. Hard to argue with that, I would think (though I get the sense that you will find a way. ;)

Fair enough but I would never buy hardware that has limited uses, little to no upgrade potential, and not even a dvd drive?

It will default to Aero off if it can't run it, otherwise about all the Services that can be shut off (that aren't already on fast trigger manual) are Tablet PC and Offline Files, maybe Defender tho it is worth its weight.

You can regain some performance by editing the graphics effects as suggested, turning off Indexing and running a lightweight AV like Avast free home with only Defender and Firewall.

I tried vLiting Ult down to half the size and found it made no difference except size. It pretty much adapts to the hardware until you get below 1ghz which it will reject and 528mb which will hobble it some.
7 will run on less than 1GHz if you run my zLite edition...

The performance enhancement is there compared to a normal 7 install...

I've installed Win 7 Pro on my girlfriend's Acer Aspire One 531 with a N270 Atom and 1GB of ram and it works superbly. Aero is on and it connects to Homegroup with no issues.

Netbook Usefulness!

Fair enough but I would never buy hardware that has limited uses, little to no upgrade potential, and not even a dvd drive?

I knew there would be a reasonable retort. My response is the same as yours: Fair enough.

I just wanted to put another 2 cents in on the usefullness of the Netbooks :

My wife wanted a Netbook and my arguement to her was that for the price of the Netbook, she could get a small laptop (even though I have enough hardware to support her cause) but she wanted her own.

Now I like the concept of the Netbook but the price value made no sense to me.

I also loved the Jornada 728 palmtop PC era except that crappy Windows CE/2000 left me smarting and with the larger screen and keyboard, I could travel or be in a training class and be able to dial in remotely to the office (which I have had to do using my palm pc is awesome without having to lug around one of my portable work stations.

Much thanks to the $100 PC effort which forced the industry to create these small wonders and the fact that I recently was able to get 2 for nearly free (HP C210) by adding 2 lines to my plan (I was able to pickup the previous model old stock ) to make room for the new ones. A deal that can't be beat.

The models that I have have the Atom 450 and 250G HDD. The new models are the 455 with 160G hdd. If I could upgrade to the dual core processor I would but the performance for me is awesome.

And I can put Linux on here (Puppy Linux) and keep it smoking hot for years to come.

An awesome value!

Well, I was doing some research on the recommended version of 7 to upgrade my lil Netbookies to and could not resist adding a comment to help someone else along!

Cheers

It IS alive! xD

I was googling through for this type of info too.
I have a Sony VPCYB15AG netbook model which is running on Windows Starter® Ed.
I'm thinking of a clean Win7 Ultimate install on this with a USB flash disk.
I don't have any driver CD provided with this netbook so i might have some driver issue later. Can anyone tell me where to start?
I hate the fact that I cant change the netbook's wallpaper with the Starter Edition.

I still haven't created a bootable flash boot disk yet but i think there'd be no problem with that as there're many tutorials out there to guide me through the process of making one.
I like the fact that Win7 Ultimate provides lots of features which i could switch on/off if the needs arise, unlike Starter Ed.

p/s: First post of this thread was 2years ago..
