BEX Event/Error: Killing Chrome, Firefox, AND Explorer

Hi All,

I do not know if this is the correct section to post since my problem seems to be an intersections of many sectors, so here goes....

Yesterday while using Firefox I noticed it kept crashing, with the cause being a "BEX Event". I try opening it to no avail, everytime terminating immediately after I clicked on it. I tried Chrome and Explorer, but both of them suffered the same problem, immediately crashing due to the BEX error. I restarted my system multiple times to see if it subsides, but it reappeared promptly everytime for ALL three browsers (!) I tried Safe Mode with networking to see if its gone. Nope, same problem, with Explorer and Firefox collapsing instantly, while Chrome seem to take around 10-12 seconds of surfing before flatlining due to the same cause.

I then decided to use System Restore and managed to take my whole system back to 5 days ago when none of the problems were happening. Tried again, but nope, same issue with a BEX event. This time it seems Explorer would display it as BEX64 instead of just BEX. I tried resetting entire settings for Explorer, but the BEX error would always prevent me from doing so by shutting down the whole things before its done. I thought, maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with a faulty DEP on Explorer, and added it the list of exceptions for DEP. Still didn't work, and the system wouldn't let me add Chrome and Firefox to the list either. I tried to see if maybe I can download some new antivirus or antispyware programs off the net, except that none of my browsers work, so I have no access to the Internet in both normal and Safe modes.... Sufficient to say I am typing here from a library's computer.

To sum it up, whatever my OS has is relentless and merciless as ***. I'm starting to suspect it maybe a virus/trojan, but the symptoms don't the match the usual suspects. I'm literally at my wit's end and have no idea what it is or how to best proceed forward. ANY help or advice would be appreciated!

Several threads I found for a BEX Event pointed at Norton (Symantec) as being the culprit, even if you are not using it or thought you had uninstalled it. The fix was to download and run the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec.

A few pointed at McAfee as well. They also have a removal tool.

What anti-virus are you using? If you are using Norton then reinstall it after checking to see if the problem is resolved or switch to another one, like the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

All browsers in Win 7 corrupted by BEX error

Started on my big PC a few weeks ago, first noted in Firefox, then also found in Chrome and IE as well. Every time I close a tab, exit the browser or switch to another tab I get a BEX error - same in all three browsers.

I'm thinking this started after some Windows Registry updates a few weeks ago, but it may also be something else.

I went through several suggested fixes I found on the web and none have helped. I see the thread itself is over two years old but only appeared on y machine a few weeks ago.

I will restore an older backup tonight to see if that helps.

I had the same BEX issue but only with Chrome and all google products. It started after I installed Acid Pro 5, which added some old Microsoft .NET framework files (~ 1.*) that Windows 7 informed me would cause compatibility issues. I installed anyway because I had a song to make. Chrome would not work after that, nor would googleupdate.exe (the download file to install just about any google product). Uninstalling Acid and the old .NET framework did not fix the problem. Sadness, since I now have profound urge to install Google Earth. My work-around for now: use my other desktop pc.

I hope it's ok to piggyback on this older thread. I'm having a similar issue with a BEX error crashing all my browsers.

I've gone through all the recommended threads/potential solutions with no good results. Frustrated by the error I went ahead and wiped my SSD and reinstalled Win7 Ultimate 64bit. I then added in some of the basic drivers (LAN, USB, audio) and immediately installed Chrome. The browser works until I go into settings, at which point it crashes and throws the same BEX error as OP.

So again, this is a fresh install of Win7. The only thing I've added are the basic drivers and Chrome -- no updates, no virus protection, no other applications installed.
