Hello everybody,

Since 2 days i'm running into troubles with the installation of Windows 7 on an Asus notebook X751MA with pre-installed Windows 8.1.

The first manipulations i've done in BIOS are:

  • Security tab -> Secure boot on Disable
  • Boot tab -> Launch CSM on Enable.
  • Set first boot option on DVD-ROM.
The computer boots on the Windows 7 DVD, I see the progress bar with the sentence "Windows is loading the files...". When the progress bar is finished, the "Starting Windows" with the animated logo appears and 5 seconds later, a Blue Screen is displayed with the following information:

The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.
Please contact your system vendor for an update BIOS. STOP 0x000000A5
(0x0000000000000011, 0x0000000000000008, 0xFFFFFFFFFFD1B018,
0x0000000020120913)

What I've tried since:

  • Set Power off Energy Saving on Disabled (since ACPI error is Power related...)
  • Set Wake on lid Open on Disabled
  • Set SATA configuration on IDE (but then I can't boot on the DVD)
  • The same error occurs when I try to install Windows XP
  • The Windows 7 DVD is not corrupted (succefully tested on another computer)
  • I'm running the latest version of BIOS (206).
I've already "downgraded" (upgraded is more appropriate) from Windows 8 to Windows 7 on three others ASUS notebooks without a single problem (F751L, K72J, X75V).

During my researches in Asus support site, I've noticed only Windows 8.1 64 bits is available when you are asked to insert your OS to access the drivers list.

How is it possible to have a laptop with sufficient hardware to run Windows 7 and not being able to install it ? Well, if I knew it I certainly wouldn't have bought the X751MA.

The X551MA had exactly the same problem and its hardware is very similar. The problem was solved thanks to a BIOS update from ASUS.

http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/338018-cant-install-windows-7-new-asus-laptop-2.html

Do you think it's the same scenario here ?

I would appreciate any help or advice,

Thanks in advance for your time,

Regards,

Oli.

PS: You will find in the attached pictures all the BIOS Tabs and the complete BS Error message.

It may be that you don't need CSM enabled to install Win7. You want to try to install it to UEFI first anyway, and that doesn't always require CSM. So highlight the CSM setting and see what it says in the Help text at right for Enabled and Disabled. Then try disabling it, boot the DVD and look for a choice in Boot Menu for EFI DVD drive. You must boot the DVD as a EFI or UEFI device!

Make sure the SATA configuration which we cannot see is also set to AHCI.

If this fails, reset the BIOS to defaults, then try booting the DVD as a UEFI device again. If this fails check that Secure Boot remains disabled. This is the only setting on every EFI BIOS which must be disabled to Install Win7. If this fails, then try Enabling CSM again but no more.

Report back results on each of the above. The good news is that in the past year we've only had one EFI BIOS that couldn't install Win7. Most have caught up their firmware to the market's overwhelming desire for Win7 and absolute loathing of the flop Win8.

Ok, I'm back with the results and they are not good.

So here is what I've done:

  1. Save & Exit -> Restore to Default
  2. Security -> Security boot menu -> Security boot on Disabled
  3. Boot -> Boot option #1 on UEFI DVD Windows 7 x64
I've let Launch CSM on Disabled, Fast Boot on Enabled and SATA Configuration on AHCI, these are their default value.

The PC boots on the Windows 7 DVD in UEFI, there is the progress bar with the sentence "Windows is loading the files...". then the "Starting Windows" with the animated logo appears but instead of a Blue Screen popping up, the screen is frozen with a red artifact at the top of it (see the attached crappy picture).

Back to the BIOS, I've changed the following:

  1. Boot -> Launch CSM on Enabled
Unfortunatly, I get the same 0xA5 error at the same place but it's displayed at least.

Set Fast Boot to disabled.

What is the SATA controller setting, and those choices?

Try again with CSM disabled booting as a UEFI device.

Then if that fails try enabling CSM and booting as a non-UEFI device, delete all partitions during install.

I have two options in sata configuration: AHCI and IDE.

  • CSM enabled/Non UEFI Device/AHCI -> Same error
  • CSM enabled/Non UEFI Device/IDE -> Same error
  • CSM disabled/Fast boot Disabled/UEFI Device/AHCI -> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/Fast Boot Disabled/UEFI Device/IDE-> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/Fast boot enabled/UEFI Device/AHCI -> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/Fast Boot enabled/UEFI Device/IDE-> Screen frozen
I can't set my partitions, I can't even reach the Langage selection menu, the Blue screen occurs before.

I just checked your specs and see 32 bit Win7. Tell me you're not trying to install 32 bit to UEFI? Do you have 64 bit ISO for your licensed version?

Where did you get the Win7 installation disk? Is it known-good and has installed successfully recently, and to UEFI?

Extract the 64x ISO from DVD using ImgBurn, check it's HASH against official HASH in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall Windows 7, write it to UEFI formatted flash stick using Option One from UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows. Make sure the settings don't slip when you load the ISO.

Then set Windows Boot Manager to boot first in BIOS setup, trigger flash stick using Asus One Time Boot menu key which is often F8, or whatever it says on first screen.

We want to compare the errors received with CSM and Fast Boot enabled/disabled.

Have you inquired with Asus Support about the PC's BIOS supporting Win7? Again, there is only one other (HP) I've seen in over a year that hasn't been updated for Win7 UEFI.

How is it possible to have a laptop with sufficient hardware to run Windows 7 and not being able to install it ? Well, if I knew it I certainly wouldn't have bought the X751MA.

With all respect to you, i won't blame Asus for this. They designed this laptop specifically to run "Win8.1" and nothing else. On the official product specification page ( Notebooks & Ultrabooks | X751MA | ASUS Global ), only Windows 8 is listed as the supported OS.

I have seen an option in some Asus laptops to set the BIOS to be compatible with either "Win8" or "Win7". This item will be usually located under "Advanced" menu ( named "OS selection" or so, can't remember exact name ). Most of the modern "Lenovo" laptops also has similar OS selection option in BIOS.

An example :

342747d1418245688-lenovo-g50-30-dual-boot-windows-7-8-x-impossible-bios_exit_-selection.jpg

Enabling the "Windows 7" mode will usually disables the new ACPI features which are not compatible with "Windows 7". Your BIOS doesn't seems to have such an option. Anyway you are safe in Greg's hand as he will find a way to install "Win 7" on that laptop if it's possible somehow :).

Btw, at least you are able to disable "SecureBoot" and enable "CSM" mode. But this may not be possible with upcoming laptops as it is no longer mandatory to have an off switch for "SecureBoot" in BIOS. It's up to the OEM manufacturer to whether include an option to disable "SecureBoot" or not.

As far as I know, the installation of Windows 7 32 bits is unfaisable in UEFI, you have to enable CSM. This is the OS I use on the PC i'm using right now.

I'm using a Windows 7 Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (x64) ISO unlocked downloaded from a torrent site, since I couldn't get it somewhere else (sad to admit but it's true). I was using another Windows 7 Professional (x64) official DVD but after a few installs, I decided to get another ISO because it was annoying to every time download the SP1 after a fresh install.

The Hash key from the ISO is 9F92877E1AB55BED390040762914123A14868CF6. I used ei.cfg Removal Utility to relock the ISO and checked the Hash key again. It changes to 5370BB44F497E1B19114C7CF70F5CDEF9F3A2582 which is the correct SHA1 key.

I used this ISO on another computer (not in UEFI) and everything was fine.

I made a bootable USB with this ISO thanks to Rufus, and the result is the same.

  • CSM disabled/#1 Boot on UEFI USB/Fast boot Disabled/AHCI -> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/#1 Boot on UEFI USB/Fast Boot Disabled/IDE-> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/#1 Boot on UEFI USB/Fast boot enabled/AHCI -> Screen frozen
  • CSM disabled/#1 Boot on UEFI USB/Fast Boot enabled/IDE-> Screen frozen
The frozen screen occurs at the same time with the same red artifact (see picture in previous post) only in UEFI mode.

The Blue Screen is the same everytime (each digit is identical) and occurs only in CSM enabled.

The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.

Of course I contacted Asus before posting here.

I'm experiencing troubles when I attempt to install Windows 7 64 bits on my new
laptop X751MA. In BIOS, I've disabled Secure Boot and Enabled CSM to be allowed
to boot on the Windows 7 DVD. I can see the progress bar "Windows is loading
files...", then the Starting Windows screen during 5 seconds and after that there is
the following blue screen: "The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.

0x0000000020120913). I've already downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7 on
several Asus laptops without problems, it's the first time i see this one.
The first response I had is:

Thank you for sending us your question.

I''m sorry to hear you are not able to install Windows 7.

Unfortunately we can''t provide you any support with downgrading your notebook to
Windows 7, that is because we only support the original product configuration.

The reason for this is because we diddn''t test Windows 7 on your notebook so we
can''t guarantee it works well.

During the install of a different operating system you will face problems most of the
time, in this case you allready experienced some issues during the install and we
recommend to keep your notebook as it is.

I hope I informed you enough.
I replied:

Well, I can understand you can''t provide support for your product for each different
OS out there, but I''m very surprised that Asus completely give up support for
Windows 7 because it still the most used OS around the world (even today Windows
XP is more used than Windows 8.1).

Can''t you provide a BIOS update to allow me to install Windows 7 ? You have already
done that for the X551MA and his specs are very similar to the X751MA.
Asus support replied:

I recommend to keep the BIOS as it is now.

Maybe you can try the following steps to enable the Windows 7 Installation:

1. Turn your system off.
2. Press F2 during bootup to enter the BIOS.
3. Go to Security and set Secure Boot on Disable.
4. Go to Boot and set Laucnh CSM on Enable.
5. Press F10 and save your settings and restart your system.

Did this had any effect?
I replied:

Yes, I did every single point, as I said in my first message.

I can boot on the Windows 7 DVD, I see the progress bar "windows is loading files..." after that I have the "Starting Windows" animated logo and 5 seconds later, a Blue Screen Appears.

The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.

0x0000000020120913)

Usually, when i reach the langage selection menu, I press MAJ+F10 to start the command prompt, I delete all partitions and I convert the disk into MBR.

After that, i do the installation of Windows 7 on a new partition.

I did it on 3 Asus notebook without problems (F751L, K72J, X75V).

The X751MA has the minimum specifications to run Windows 7, so I don''t know why it''s impossible to install it ?

I presume it''s a BIOS parameter that is missing. The X551MA had exactly the same problem and a BIOS update fixed it.
Now i'm waiting for the next response.

Well, if you want to know all the story, this laptop is for my dad. He came to me with the printed product description of the computer and I said it was ok for office work. But like me, he is allergic to the new Windows 8 that is not designed for "professionnal" use. Furthermore, he has some softwares that doesn't work with Windows 8 and he doesn't want to buy the last version of them because these old versions have all the functionnalities he needs.

Of course, I know that Asus laptops have now Windows 8.1 pre-installed systematically. But on the product page of the store it isn't specify anywhere that it will be IMPOSSIBLE to install another OS. And I'm not trying to install Linux, I'm trying to install Windows 7, the first used OS in the world today.

In addition, I've already downgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 7 on several Asus laptops, this is why I didn't investigate in depth.

I notice that Windows Boot Manager is listed in BIOS Boot Priority and Override options, while the hard drive itself does not appear. This could be a problem if you're trying a Legacy install with CSM enabled. It would only utilize WBM for a UEFI install, but need the hard drive present to prioritize to install to CSM. So it's a long shot but see to it that the hard drive is in the Boot Order when you try installing with CSM enabled, otherwise follow the prompts (hopefully) to the right hand side of BIOS to add a Boot Option so that the hard drive is in the list - and set first to boot if trying a flash stick install which should always be triggered from BIOS Boot menu key.

Note that the UEFI formatted flash stick for GPT option when formatted by Rufus will not work for the Legacy CSM install. Use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool or if it is fussy about the ISO use UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive.

Hey greg,

I tried to add the HDD in the boot list with Add new boot option.

Unfortunaltly, the Blue Screen appears again, same with the new USB boot.

I think I've performed every possible configuration in BIOS to install Windows 7 on this computer. I can now have the conviction this is the BIOS that can't manage the ACPI for Windows 7, it's only designed for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

I'm going to wait the Asus reply and see if I can obtain a BIOS fix in a reasonnable delay. If it's not the case, I will return this laptop to the store, even if they don't accept exchanges or refund. It must be indicated in the product description that you will not be able to install another OS. This is not acceptable.

I notice that you have non-UEFI DVD option in the Boot order, followed by HD. Confirm you have booted that DVD choice since it does have the hard drive there to utilize if it will install with CSM in Legacy mode.

I'd keep the pressure on Asus for a BIOS update and also keep a current and very thorough Google search for that model Asus and BIOS' to find what others are doing about it.

Meanwhile you can install Windows 10 Technical Preview which is still pre-beta but quite stable and a worthy successor one day to Win7 with the Windows 8 style apps minimized to a corner of the Start Menu. I suggest this because it's free and getting involved in their Insider program to provide feedback will likely earn you free copies as it did for us in Win7 beta.

Did you manage to downgrade?

Hi! were you able to downgrade? we bought this "old" notebook on a garage sale (go figure) and I was about to try to downgrade it to Win 7. Yup I know this is odd but we're doing it for sake of familiarity with the person who will be using it.

I'm doing my due diligence to find out if it is at all possible before I even move anything on the notebook itself. After having read the thread, I'm very reluctant to embark on this chore.

I would appreciate any updates on the issue.

Thank you!
