I purchased a new ASUS laptop with Win8. I wanted to replace it with Win7. I wiped, formatted and partitioned the HD. I changed the BIOS so it boots from the DVD. I put my 7 disc in and started. A message says it is loading files. In a minute or so I get the Blue Death Screen with the message: Problem detected, shut down to prevent possible damage. The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact vendor for updated version.
ASUS has been off line for several days so no help there. Anywhere else I can get a updated BIOS? If that is the problem. Is there a thread somewhere this was solved?
One other thing, got the same results when I tried to install XP. Thanks

You need to check your BIOS settings. If you need to update your BIOS, then you can likely download what you need from the ASUS website. What you described is typical of incorrect BIOS settings. If the BIOS settings were correct, I think you'd be able to do the clean install regardless of a BIOS update.

I think you should delete all the partitions and let the Win 7 install do the partitioning and formatting. The Win 7 install will give you the opportunity to select what size partitions you desire.

What are your BIOS options?

Regards

Check my bios for what? I made some changes to the bios so I could boot from the dvd but that's all. That bios is the poorest excuse for information I have ever seen. I went to the ASUS website for support but they don't make it easy to find anything. I entered my model number and the feedback showed I had a machine running Win8.1 64 bit. There was not one word of anything like that on the advertisement. I will return to ASUS for more digging. Thanks for your feedback.

I have tried to install Win7 and WinXP from my disc but it never gets past loading files before the screen goes black then blue with the message already mentioned. I am able to get into the BIOS and only made the changes needed so I can boot from the DVD drive, which it does. By recovery BIOS do you mean flashing the BIOS? On the ASUS page I entered my machine serial number and it responds with can't ID your model with that number. I went through entering the number several times with variations on the 0 or O, same message. I did reset the BIOS to default and started over with just changes to boot from the dvd. No difference. As I mentioned before I entered the model number manually at ASUS and the end showed the laptop came with Win8.1 64 bit. Would that matter now since it's gone? I tried to check out the BIOS Utility files but crashed my Opera, twice. I am working on the laptop problem from my desktop.

What happens if you reset the BIOS to defaults and do not change anything? Usually F11 or F12 will allow you to access a boot menu and you can select the DVD drive from that.

I have tried to install Win7 and WinXP from my disc but it never gets past loading files before the screen goes black then blue with the message already mentioned. I am able to get into the BIOS and only made the changes needed so I can boot from the DVD drive, which it does.

You should check all your BIOS settings to ensure all options are set as you desire.

By recovery BIOS do you mean flashing the BIOS? On the ASUS page I entered my machine serial number and it responds with can't ID your model with that number.

Yes, a recovery BIOS update on an Intel board involves removing a jumper and booting with a USB Flash drive attached with the recovery BIOS file which is a different file type than the normal flash BIOS update, but still the latest version. I would think ASUS would have a similar procedure. Check your motherboard technical documents or the ASUS website

I went through entering the number several times with variations on the 0 or O, same message. I did reset the BIOS to default and started over with just changes to boot from the dvd. No difference.

Again, check all you BIOS options to ensure they are correct for your configuration.

As I mentioned before I entered the model number manually at ASUS and the end showed the laptop came with Win8.1 64 bit. Would that matter now since it's gone?

I don't think it matters. They likely sold the latest model with Win 8. Win 7 should load just fine if you have the hardware and BIOS configured correctly.

I tried to check out the BIOS Utility files but crashed my Opera, twice. I am working on the laptop problem from my desktop.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. How do you get into your BIOS? I simply depress the F2 key during Boot when I get the screen that indicates how to get to the BIOS.

Are you trying do this install from your desktop onto your laptop? If so, I don't think that's a good idea.

The only thing I can do on the laptop is look at the BIOS. Well GParted opens so I can look at the HD and partition it as I said before. I'm using my desktop to get information on solving the laptop problem, that being I can't get a OS installed. I got on the ASUS site with my desktop. When I tried to download one of their BIOS files and crashed was because it thought my desktop was the machine in question? I did not like the Win8 but never thought it would be such a difficult task just to change from 8 to 7. And all the suggestions and directions I've received over the past few days haven't changed the situation at all. Many people have switched from 8 to 7 but never ran into circumstances I encountered. This is my first laptop. I have only worked with desktops before, not that it should make a difference. I'm not taking the laptop apart to build a new one like I do with the desktops. All I can do is keep searching. Thanks

Do you have a DVD/CD drive on your laptop? What is the make of your hdd?

I would download the hdd manufacturer's hdd utility, DOS version, burn it to a DVD/CD and boot your laptop to full erase or low level format your hdd. This will remove all partitions and leave you with a hdd in the raw. Then try the Win 7 install by inserting the Win 7 DVD into your DVD drive and see what happens. You should be able to set your partitions and format the drive using the Win 7 install program.

Yes I have a DVD drive in my ASUS laptop. That was the main reason I picked that model. The HD was not ID by the BIOS or at least nothing I recognized. Just a list of letters and numbers. I did use GPacked to remove all partitions on the drive. I see lots of warnings about NOT flashing the BIOS unless you know what your doing as you can kill the motherboard. Seems like I've accomplished the same feat. Running out of new ideas but I'll keep looking. Thanks for your efforts.

I don't think you have a big problem. It's just that you aren't that skilled at dealing with the BIOS.

If you follow instructions, your problems will go away and your new laptop will be running Win 7.

What is the make and model of your hdd?

Unskilled at dealing with BIOS the truth. Been fooling with computers since the earyl 80's but it seems I haven't learned very much. The HD is a 500 GB HGST (Western Digital) Model HTS545050A. I will follow instructions gladly if it will return my laptop to working order.

Is your hdd made by Western Digital or Hitachi? A Google search of your model indicates Hitachi. Did Hitachi sell their hdd group to Western Digital?

Download the hdd utility from the hdd manufacturer's website and do a full erase or low level format of your drive to remove all partitions.

Some good news for a change. It never came to mind about trying to reinstall Win8 until my brother suggested it. My laptop didn't come with any disc so even though I am the rightful user I don't deserve a Win8 of my own. I used his disc and it installed 8. No error windows and any problem. I'm at the part now where I have to sign up for a e-mail/internet account. The set up will not take my old address. It needs a new one through Outlook.com or Hotmail, something like that. I will try to do that now but just wanted to keep you up to date on progress. Hopefully setting up the new account will go ok.

To upgrade a Win8 PC to Win7 you must boot into BIOS setup, often through the Win8 GUI which if its still installed is the only way to access BIOS, turn off Secure Boot and then enable CSM or Legacy BIOS to some degree to allow Win7 or another OS to be installed. This is described in Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7.

The installation media then needs to be booted as a UEFI device if you want UEFI install, deleting all partitions during the install to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...e-firmware-interface-install-windows-7-a.html.

The UEFI install can always be done but sometimes Users don't' want to take the time to find the correct BIOS settings so decide to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7. In this case you fully enable CSM or Legacy BIOS, then boot your installation media as a non-UEFI device, delete all partitions during the install.

If Win8 is still installed on the drive it may be necessary to enter BIOS setup via the Win8 Boot Options Menu: How To Access The BIOS On A Windows 8 Computer

Once Win8 is gone it reverts to accessing your BIOS by tapping the F-key.
