Dear everyone,
This is my first post here and I'm here because I've drawn a blank trying to fix the problem that I'm having. I hope that I've posted this in the right place.
I had a call from a friend who was having problems with a Win7 Home Premium 64-bit machine. The internet wasn't working. I went over and took a look and couldn't get a connection to the router (no IP) via a network cable. I brought it back to my house, tried a connection via my cable to my router. I still couldn't get a connection. I put it down to a faulty network card and ordered a wifi card as a replacement.
I installed the wifi card and exactly the same problem occurred. Then I saw a popup saying that the firewall was disabled. I went to enable the firewall and got the following error:
Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x8007042c.
I've traced this back to the services.msc and have been looking at all the services to see what's wrong. I can't start any of the internet functionality because the Base Filtering Engine service won't start. When I try to start the Base Filtering Engine I get the following error:
Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
I've done all the obvious things - checked my Hijackthis log, run TDSSKiller and Rootkitrevealer (which wouldn't run), run Malwarebytes anti-Malware and Superantispyware in the hope that it might be a virus. I've uninstalled AVG Free 2011 which some websites suggested might be at fault.
Can I simply copy the missing files for the Base Filtering Engine from another Win7x64 PC, and if so, what are they?
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks for your time.
