Solved closing command prompt in the middle of an operation

I was doing a clean all command on one of my HDD's. I was closing windows and accidentally closed the command prompt window. The drive is in an external dock and the light is still flashing like it's still doing what I asked it to do.

I reopened CMD and typed diskpart but that's as far as I took it. I haven't checked what services are running.

Can you reboot back into Windows 7?
If you can, then just try the cmd again on the selected drive. Of course you can't select the drive/partition "C" that Windows 7 is installed.

I never logged off of Windows. I was closing multiple windows (not the OS), and I clicked on the X for the CMD prompt. I reentered the diskpart/clean all command on the drive and it seems to working.

Please complete the tutorial as the tutorial is wrote.

I try to remember that a reboot or shutdown and startup can have a cleansing effect after a small boo boo.

I restarted the computer. Here is the screenshot of disk management. I'm also running clean all again.

Did you or are you running the Clean All cmd on disk 3?

Did it complete? That big of drive would take a lot of time.

Remember that a drive (Disk 3) might not show up as (Disk #3) in the cmd prompt. One must be sure of what disk the Clean All command is done on.

The screenshot above is before I started the clean all command. The command prompt says succeeded so I started on my other drives. I have 11 HDD's that I wasn't sure what if anything was on them so I wanted to erase them.

If I had to do what you are trying to do, I would do it in this fashion.
Cleaning 11 HDD will take a very long time.

1. Remove all drives except the drive Windows 7 is installed and 1 other HDD.

2. Do a Clean All on that 1 drive.

3. When the 1 drive has been cleaned, replace it with another drive and run the Clean All cmd on that drive.

Do this until all the drives you want cleaned has been completed.
This method will allow you to keep track of what has been completed and make sure that any drives you don't want cleaned are not cleaned.

That's what I'm doing. The drives came out of computers that I built/disassembled. I have them in a pile and was cleaning them one by one. I'm almost done, I'm doing the last one as I type this.

On the last drive now. I guess I'll be careful and not close the command window if something is running. Still not sure if I "broke" anything.

I don't think you hurt anything as long as Windows 7 is working properly.

Just for caution; when your done doing your Clean All on all the desired drives you could run a sfc /scannow.

There is a way to know what is running in the background.

Press+Hold both Ctrl + Alt and press Del.

Select "Start Task Manager"

I know that. I was wondering what happens to the command that is running if you accidentally close the command window. I checked task manager after closing the window and cmd.exe was not running but the light on the HDD dock was still flashing like it was doing something.

There is no need to worry about these programs still running or not.
Not only on Windows window, it still check on DOS mode in Windows.

As to my knowledge, if the HDD light is flashing, this means that the system is reading the HDD, not writing.
When the HDD light is on/stable, this means the the system is writing to a particular HDD.
This problem will arise if you have more than 1 HDD.

But all this is not to worry on whether it will damage your HDD.
As to what i means, if there is 2 or more internal HDD, as to which HDD is still running active programs.

For External HDD, you can see light on the External HDD, flashing or not (option).

When you click "Shutdown", the system to check for any programs still running in the background.
If it there is a program is open, the system will find a way to end the programs SAFELY, a few seconds more to turn off.
It may not corrupted any HDD(s) and the system will only shutdown after terminating the active program.

I am use to do straight power off, without the shutdown command, as i know what is the programs i want to terminate.

Note:
If the system did not do a proper shutdown command.
Upon next boot up, the Windows would request you to choice on Safe mode, or normal mode.
Usually i choose normal mode to boot into Windows OS.
After the Windows OS boot up without any problem, i will do a shutdown; then boot up again.
In this way, the system know that it had done a proper shutdown, and no prompt on boot up again.

Same as internal HDD.
Flashing is reading. Will not damage the HDD if sudden power off.
(My previous company IT Administrator just unplug the Ext HDD /devices, as he told me it is not a problem.)
Stable is writing, as best let it finished.
