I am trying to update my system with windows update, but it doesnt' work..

I have narrowed it down to BITS not starting.. When I open services and try to
start it manually, I get the error "Windows could not start the BITS service on LOCAL COMPUTER. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified"

I have tried the Microsoft FixIt and the Fix Windows Update utility from TheWindowsClub.. From another post, I also noticed the folder at

\users\all users\application data\microsoft\network\download

is set to 'read only'.. I can uncheck that, but it stays as read only.. I'm
not sure if that has anything to do with it or not..

Is this fixable? I'd like to update!

This may be simple, or it may be very complex - are you ready for what could be a long thread?
If not, then a repair install is the way to go.

A little history on your problem would help us decide how complex this is likely to get.
Have you had malware problems recently?
How long-standing is your problem?
What other symptoms apart from not being able to update are you seeing?

go through the list of services and make sure all of the following are set to Automatic or Manual:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions, COM+ Event System, DCOM Server Process Launcher

Try to start these services (of not started yet). All start fine?

Start REGEDIT and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters
What do you see on the right side of screen?

Have you had malware problems recently?

I check for malware frequently, using both Malwarebytes and superantispyware.. I haven't specifically noticed any problem until now.

How long-standing is your problem?

I'm not really sure, I just recently realized I wasn't updating and that led me to find out this problem..
I think the last successful update was a month ago

What other symptoms apart from not being able to update are you seeing?

Again, I am only noticing things now that I am looking for them.. One problem is I can't open a cmd prompt
as administrator (everything in the compatibility tab is greyed out)..

In elevated command prompt

Code:
cd /d "C:\Users\All Users\Application Data\microsoft\Network"attrib *.*
post output

I cannot start an elevated command prompt, my whole compatibility tab is greyed out..

go through the list of services and make sure all of the following are set to Automatic or Manual:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions, COM+ Event System, DCOM Server Process Launcher

Try to start these services (of not started yet). All start fine?

RPC is started and is currently set to Automatic
System Even Notification is currently started and set to Automatic
Windows Management Instrumentation is currrently started and set to Automatic
COM+ Event System is currently started and set to Automatic
DCOM Server Process Launcher is currently started and set to Automatic

Start REGEDIT and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters

My BITS registry doesn't look like yours (see pic)..

Should/Could I use something like Sandboxie to make sure nothing ever infects my system?

Ain't no such animal.

The only thing that can prevent infection is your own habits - you MUST learn to evaluate every click you make in terms of risk, or you WILL get infected/infested again, no matter what software protecton you use.

I was having the same problems - Windows Update Service and BITS service were not listed in services.msc
1. Ran Malwarebytes, removed 3 viruses.
2. ran batch file, Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat to restore Windows Update Services.
3. imported your .reg file.

Now the computer is updating from Microsoft.

Thanks again.

Thanks Kaktussoft.

I have been trying to fix this issue since august, from forums, microsoft forums and even the apps MS have to fix it and none of it was any help, just goes to show that MS need to hire new support staff because all i needed was the correct registry entry, once i used Kactussoft's reg key, i have run windows update and i am now downloading and installing 42 updates, so thanks again.

Hello Kaktussoft - Thanks for posting this fix... I am having the same issue as 3DPiper did. I am not the best with registry stuff though... when I try to import your registry attachment using regedit, I get an error saying that it cannot do that b/c some of the keys are in use. I've tried to do the same thing in SafeMode, but still no go. Would you have any tips on how to import your registry file so that I do not get that error? I sure appreciate any advice you might have! Thanks, TR6

Have you tried double clicking the reg file?

Otherwise try starting up in safe mode, then use the reg key file

Please import the reg file attached to this post. View attachment 268053This imports succesfully?
It's just the BITS key form registry, but I didn't include HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS\Parameters

Can you post a screenshot of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS\Parameters key? It must look like this
View attachment 268054

put psexec.exe in folder c:\windows\system32
psexec can be found on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/bb897553
Now open an elevated command prompt Elevated Command Prompt

Now type:
Code:
psexec -i -s regedit
Now regedit opens? It runs as user system. Can you edit the values now?
