Solved BITS Error 2: The System cannot find the file specified

Hi Kaktussoft - Thanks for your reply. I was able to import the reg file by doing the steps you suggested. Here's how HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS\Parameters key looks now:

After applying the registry fix, I tried to start BITS by going to Administrative Tools/Services/BITS/Properties and clicking on the Start button. Now I no longer see the "BITS Error 2" message I had before, but now I see this error:

Windows could not start the BITS service on Local Computer
Error 126: The specified module could not be found.

I tried rebooting the computer and then going to the Administrative Tools again, but the same result occurs.

Next, I started searching the forum for this new error. I found something called the "SFC/SCANNOW" tool recommended here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

I ran the tool twice, but only got part of the way through (34%) each time before saying the "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." Here's a screen shot of that:

At this point, I am not sure what else to try. Anything you could recommend? Thanks so much again for all your help, TR6

Hi Kaktussoft and NoelDP - Here's the result from the cbs.log. You'll see like I did that qmgr.dll is corrupted. I also did a search for qmgr.dll in c:\windows\system32 folder, but I could not find it there. All I could find that was close is a file named qmgrprxy.dll . Is the fix as simple as downloading qmgr.dll and placing it in that same folder? If so, please let me know. Many Thanks! - TR6

THANKS Kaktussoft! Importing the registry keys fixed our BITS error 2. We were missing most of the sub keys. We worked and searched for fixes for this problem for 2 days before finding this fix. Thanks again!

What exactly is BITS responsible for? Only Windows updates, or updates in general? If BITS is disabled will programs that are set to check for updates still do that (Firefox for example)?

Background Intelligent Transfer Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transfers

BITS transfers files on behalf of requesting applications asynchronously, i.e., once an application requests the BITS service for a transfer, it will be free to do any other job, or even terminate. The transfer will continue in the background as long as the network connection is there and the job owner is logged in. BITS jobs do not transfer when the job owner is not signed in.
BITS suspends any ongoing transfer when the network connection is lost or the operating system is shut down. It resumes the transfer from where it left off when (the computer is turned on later and) the network connection is restored. BITS supports transfers over both HTTP and HTTPS.

Great tips and they worked for me too!

However I am uncertain, should i delete the previous files in the bits.reg in Services and then import yours or should I keep them and import yours as well?

I asked you to post subkeys as well! Bits.reg imports all keys that are in bits.reg (take a look at it...open in notepad). All that keys are very default and not system specific.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS\Parameters is normally only writeable by user SYSTEM. Some viruses or reasons unknown to me cause that key will be writeable by administrators and value ServiceDll=%SystemRoot%\System32\qmgr.dll inside that key is gone or overwritten by another value.

Most of the time that's the only thing you need to add/replace.

I generally understand what you are saying but not 100%, my fault guaranteed since I am no ace at this.

The subkeys; Are those the ones found in the folders below; BITS/performance, BITS/parameters and BITS/security?
