Being bored yesterday I decided to install Black and White. The game is old - it only supports in the readme Windows 2000 and seems locked to 1024x768 screen resolution. So after the install the game naturally crashed.
This was easy to fix, the case was DDRAW.dll, obviously due to the DWM. So I set compatibility to Windows 2000, disable all visual effects, and running as administrator. It actually works! The only slight annoyance, apart from the primitive graphics (to put it nicely) is that the game is locked @ 1024x768, so there are 2 inch bars on the left and right of the screen. I'll see if I can force change this in hardware.
I'll be trying other old games to see just how good 7 is with old, very old, games. Any suggestions? They must be old, preferably DirectX 8 or so, before 2004, and one or so CD. That should do it. Those "quaint" games.
