Black screen and message on W7 boot

When I turn my machine on I get the Windows logo, then the screen goes black and a text message advising me that a disk check is occurring, and if I want to skip it I have to hit any key in X... seconds. If I let it run, it eventually goes to all black on the screen, the disk runs and runs - I let it run for two days once - and nothing happens. If I "hit any key" as instructed it goes to the Windows boot and all appears to be well. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I really hate the whole "disk check" screen thing, and would like to get rid of it. How can I do that?

That can indicate that the previous shutdown was not done properly. Are you having any issues on shutdown or are you noticing any performance issues at all??

Checkdisk does not normally run on every boot and I don't think there is even a setting to force it to do that.

But sometimes there is an incorrect entry in the registry that causes checkdisk to run on every boot until it gets "turned off." I think that if you google this issue, you will see lots of instructions on how to stop checkdisk from running at every startup. There may even be one in the tutorial section of this site.

But the fact that checkdisk does not complete is more troublesome in my mind. I would suggest perhaps booting from the windows installation disk and running checkdisk from there to see if you can get it to complete. And it shouldn't take two days. More like a couple of hours.

I'll try that

My W7 disks are back-ordered and should arrive next week. I downloaded the version I installed. Might be something corrupted there, as a result? I'll try re-loading it and see what that does.

Thanks to all for the assist!!:geek:
