Solved black screen, no repair options

My computer froze. When I attempted to reboot it appeared to start then just a black screen. The F8 key options all resulted in the black screen. When I put in the installation disk and clicked on repair, I got a background screen (blue with swirls) and a cursor but nothing to click on.

No new hardware or software. When I try to boot up, it goes to the windows error revoery screen. If I select start windows normally, I get a black screen. If I select start windows repair, it gets to the point where I see "Microsoft Corporation" with a box above it that has green bars going across. Then I get a black screen. If I hit F8 and selct windows repair, the same thing happens. If I try safe mode it loads files as far as \Windows\System32\Drivers\aswRvrt.sys and then stops. If I boot from the installation disk and click on repair, all I see is a background screen with nothing on it.

FYI, aswRvrt.sys is the Avast! Revert driver (more info here).

Are you able to do a system recovery via the repair options?
If not, start your computer and navigate to the advanced boot options (repeatedly tap F8 - more info here) and select "Last Known Good Configuration" to revert Windows back to, well, the last known good configuration.

After that, remove any Avast! software, at least for a test.
If unwilling to remove, look for a software update.

Also, it'd be a good idea to make a system repair disc, so that you can easily do a system restore and have ready to go recovery options for when something like this happens.

I cannot see any repair options. "Last known good configuration" also results in a black screen.

Hrm.. In that case I am out of ideas for now.
I'll see if I can think of something else to do, and if not, I'll ask someone else to take a look.
In the mean time, please try to preform the following scans;

Please use the SFC /SCANNOW command at boot as shown in option one of this tutorial.

   Note

You will need either your original Windows Installation disc or a Repair Disc for this to work.

1. First change the Boot order so that DVD's boot before Windows does.
2. Insert either your installation or repair disc in your machine.
3. Navigate to the System Recovery Options, and once there, click on Command Prompt.
4. In command prompt, please type the following;
   sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
   :warn::ar:Replace F: with the letter where Windows is installed on!
5. SFC will now attempt to search for integrity violations and fix those found.
6. Once done, please type "Exit" and hit ENTER to exit command prompt.
7. To restart, remove the DVD and select Restart from the menu.
   
   If SFC found and repaired any violations, please do the following;
8. When restarted, open an elevated command prompt.
9. Type (or copy) the following, this will create a .txt file on your desktop;
   findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
10. In your next reply, please attach this file using the method displayed in this tutorial.

Do not do this step if your hard drive is an SSD!

Please scan your hard drive with Chkdsk.

   chkdsk C: /F
   :ar:Replace C: with the letter of your hard drive.
5. Please report back whether or not there where errors found.

   Warning

Do not attempt to cancel or stop the scan, this might result in a loss in data and could render your Windows unusable!

It is working again. I did /FixMbr, /FixBoot, and /RebuildBcd. The last step never finished, not sure how long it is supposed to take. I let it run 18 hours and it was still blinking, saying it may take a while. But I was able to launch startup repair and everything appears to be fine.

Update avast asap. Right click the avast tray icon and choose update-program.

That should not have happened.
