Solved Black Screen with Cursor, tried many suggestions but still cannot boot

I have read and tried many suggestions on this forum in the last week without success.
The following are the details of my issue and what I have tried to correct it:
Black Screen with Cursor only
Desktop is a Medion Akoya with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Ran Repair but told nothing to repair.
Tried restore point, still got black screen with cursor.
Tried Safe Mode, black screen with cursor.
Tried virus checking disk, found problems but still went to black screen after rebooting.
Cannot create a boot usb drive as I have an OEM desktop so no CD/DVD and unable to download iso file as Product Key does not work (OEM). Got another Win7 disc but did not work.
All files are present on the disk.
I want to retain data on my disk without doing a clean install.
Any help would be appreciated.

• Press one time CTRL+ALT+DEL
• Start Task Manager
• New > Task > Go to the Windows folder and click on explorer.exe
• Click on OK

Thanks for the suggestion georgeks. Unfortunately CTRL+ALT+DEL will not work on the Black Screen with Cursor.
Am I doing something incorrectly?

Try this: Re-boot your system, press F2 or F8 and using the down-arrow key select "Last Known Good Configuration", then press <ENTER>

Thanks again georgeks, I have tried all reboot options (safe mode, normal, last known good etc.) and they all lead back to the black screen with cursor.

Thanks 'ThrashZone'for the link. I have downloaded the file and copied it to USB but it did not work. I got the error below and am unable to correct it. Can you advise as to how I get around this please.

Can I clarify also that if I get it to download correctly, is it possible to reload Windows 7 and retain my files and apps/programs?

Hello jnmturner.

Have you tried this:

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Enable low-resolution video (640×480), and then press Enter.

Same issue here - tried all above suggestions - no change. Trying to run SFC /scannow but get message of a pending repair and to reboot, I reboot but still get same message. Tried another online suggestion to run: DISM.exe /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions - this runs successfully and says to reboot, but even after reboot I still cannot run SFC and get same ..pending repair message - so I am stuck in this loop. I have also tries restore points which I can see but they won't run and get a message that system protection needs to be turned on.

Did you use rufus to create the bootable flash media ?

Not sure if that last post was directed to me or the person that started the post. Regardless, I am looking for a repair option not a reinstall (which maybe my last resort). I do have a repair disk & install media if needed. Thanks.

Thanks Boris, tried that but same result.

Tried Rufus and it completed but when I tried using the USB to boot, the black screen with cursor appeared again.

One interesting point, I tried restoring to a previous restore point and found a number of restore points available since the black screen issue first arose. This suggests that the machine is working away in the background with Windows and program updates. Does this make sense, could it be a video driver gone or something???

Unless I missed it you haven't given any system spec's thus far
Use the link above my signature to Fill in your system spec's page please
This forum makes it quite easy to do it and upload for you with little effort
Only catch is to temporarily make ie11 your default browser

Hi jnmturner.

I would recommend that you follow this tutorial with the W7 installation disk you have:

How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

And once you have the command prompt window opened, I would recommend you try to run this:

sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=C:\ /OFFWINDIR=C:\Windows

Where "C" is your Windows drive. Hopefully this will fix your problem!

Hi ThrashZone, unfortunately I cannot get my system specs as I cannot access by PC (that is why I did not upload them first day). I had a copy before from Belarc Advisor but this got dumped so now all I know is the PC make and disk size (Medion Akoya with 1 tb disk using Win7 Home Premium 64 bit).

Boris, thanks for the suggestion, I will try this later using the USB drive I created as I do not have an original installation disk (OEM Version on PC did not get disk).

I decided to reload another version of the operating system and am now running again. Thanks for your suggestions, they were most welcome.

I now have to go to another forum as I am having problems with my Bluetooth Soundbar connection which was working before the reload and is not now.
