blank screen issue

Hello all,

My brothers computer is running windows 7 home edition and has been working great since he upgraded a couple months ago. To his dismay this morning when he went to use it the screen was blank with a movable mouse cursor, after a forced restart upon rebooting there was no windows loading screen of any kind just an almost instant blank screen with a movable mouse cursor. I am fairly computer savy so i tried to press f8 to see if i could get access to safe mode. Every force restart leads to the same thing even when i put the windows installation disk to see if it could boot up to the disk for a repair. If its any help i tried to press SHIFT 5 times to see if the "Sticky keys" window would pop up and it did. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Tyler

Did the sticky keys actually pop something up, and did safe mode work?

boot up and safemode selection screens dont show along with any sort of loading screen it pretty much instantly comes up to a blank screen with the cursor as soon as the power button is pressed. In reference to the sticky key yes for some reason that pop up appeared on the blank screen

Your GPU seems to be OK if its showing something - is this an ASUS motherboard? Can you fill in your hardware specs?

Ahh, its a laptop, download a linux live cd and see if that loads - if it does your card is fine and the integrated intel GPU should work fine. Before that, can you see if safe mode with command prompt works?

Try a linux live cd - it loads into memory and should appear.

Try turning off the laptop, unplug it from the wall and remove the battery for a few minutes and try again

The point is to see if your GPU works - if it doesn't load the CD, it may be physically damaged. Otherwise, reinstall and reformat 7.

What worked? The live CD? If it does, reinstall 7, but while in the live CD, copy off your files to an external USB and reformat and reinstall 7. Your GPU looks OK then.

If you were talking about the battery removal post the issue is probably with some power savings setting on the computer either in the control panel, or in the device manager for each device, properties, power management tab. I assume when he did the upgrade on the laptop he downloaded all the newest drivers that would help Windows 7 support the installed devices?
