i would like to know, is there anyway to globally block all options on video playing on a computer, any player at all should not be able to play a video, only listen to music.

forgot to mention, my problem is to block other users from playing video files.

i would like to know for windows 7 as well as xp if possible.
thanks in advanced.

No real way to disable that. There will always be a work around for a savvy user.

You could try to change the filetype associations for all video filetypes to e.g. Wordpad. But if someone changes it back, you are out of luck.

Hi.

Bit of a strange request?
i know, but i've got "many" requests to keep an eye on children, or even adults (they themselves want to keep away, but it's not so easy) that are addicted.
and computers in schools.

thanks all for the help.
the only real way to get around this, that i know, is to setup a new limited account in windows 7, and not allow any of the video programs. but it won't work in xp.

how about creating a second user account and blocking video programs in it? then you could simply password your main user account.

simply uninstall the video programs and block the installing of any new programs with the exception of yourself.

Just taking up from where WHS left, after changing the video file associations to Wordpad or notepad, you can disable a user's ability to change file associations in the following way.

Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies registry subkey
If subkey doesn't exist, open the Edit menu and select New, Key to create it.
From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value.
Enter the name NoFileAssociate.
Set the value to 1 to disable the user's ability to change file associations. Click OK. Close the registry editor. Restart the computer.

This is an old trick, used to work on XP. Should be enough to put off but the most determined man.

This will not work. You cannot uninstall WMP or WMC, you can only disable it in " Windows features".

Hi there
the only way this type of stuff would be possible is to

1) lock access (write access) to the "C Drive" apart from a temporary folder

2) restrict Internet access except for Workplace permitted sites.

3) block the use of DVD / CD drives and other external media.

restrict the user from installing / modyfying the system.

This won't work 100% but should lock down the computer pretty tightly. Don't let the user have ADMINISTRATOR rights either.

Cheers

Also should add booting off an Ubuntu live cd to watch stuff or virtualizing.
