So, yesterday I tried to play a blu-ray for the first time since my final install of Windows 7, and I just cannot get it to work.

I have a Sony Vaio FZ21M with a Mat****a UJ-120 BD Drive. The drive will play CD/DVD's perfectly fine, but Blu-Ray discs just spin, make some horrible noises and My Computer doesnt recognise a disc in the drive.

Any Suggestions?

First question: Are all of your drivers up to date?

Second question: has the drive ever worked?

My drivers are as up to date as possible. Im running Windows 7 64bit, so most of the supplied drivers dont work. so I have used all the drivers from Vaio : Sony Europe Unfortunately there isnt a driver
for the SATA intel for my model.

I tried the firmware update yesterday, but when i run it the first error that pops up is WNASPI32.DLL error, click ok then the program says F/W loader does not apply to the CD/DVD drive you are using.

And to answer the previous question. Yes the blu-ray definately worked on Vista with shipped drivers, and im pretty sure it worked on a previous Win 7 Beta build.

Try this it worked for someone else I helped -

To install the firmware in compatibility mode with vista- right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

I just re read your reply before writing the below solution, and you say there is no sata driver - but there is a sata driver (SATA Driver (Intel) (Non-RAID) 8.5Sus_A - 8.5.0.1032 ) which may fix it - please click on the link i supplied in my first post - its in the list of drivers.

If that doent work -you have an intel set up - go into your bios and check to see if you have AHCI enabled.

In the bios under sata configuration - choices are IDE , Raid or AHCI. If you have AHCI enabled or Raid even (but less likely though) - if this enabled AHCI is also enabled, Windows 7 will load the driver for it during installation, but for it to function correctly you need to download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager from the intel site.

This may not be applicable to your setup but if it is, it could be causing the dvd player to malfunction.

You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
Select chipsets - chipset software - intel(R) matrix storage manager - Select Operating System - select W7RC1 (64bit OR 32 bit) - select drivers - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
(make sure you don't download the floppy configuration utility by mistake) - it will show up if you select utilities.

Ok. I managed to update the firmware by running it in Vista Compatability, dunno why I didnt think of that.

Hasnt helped things though.

The driver on the site is for 32bit only, not the current 64bit I am running. As far as I am aware, by looking in Device Manager under IDE ATA Controllers I see:

Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850
Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller

You might be able to decifer what this means alot better than me. Ill restart now and check in the BIOS and see what is present.

EDIT: I have no option in my BIOS, I believe the BIOS is very limited by Sony.

I have it, I know the problem, lucky I thought of it - W7 has installed the standard AHCI driver - the sata driver on the sony site is the intel matrix driver the numbers match, and must be an earlier version you could try to install it( i've helped some others with sony laptops and they keep saying they get 32bit drivers to install on 64bit OS's - i unpacked one package to see why, and there was a version folder, and it said it was for both 32bit and 64bit ) but you maybe be better off installing the latest version, as it would be the best choice and it would have the fix.
Set up a restore point first in case Im wrong, and install - download instructions in my previous post for the matrix driver.

ok well earlier on I installed the intel storage matrix from the Intel link you gave me, which automatically installed a new driver for the AHCI, now labelled:

Intel ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller.

But this hasnt had an affect on the blu-ray drive at all

There must be another driver for it -but its hidden or part of one of the other packages - contact sony and see if there is another driver supporting blue ray for your drive.

  1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  2. Download the MTFOPD-00174419-US.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  3. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the MTFOPD-00174419-US.EXE file to begin the installation.
  4. At the "Matsu****a BD-CMB UJ-120 Firmware Update" screen, click "Next".
  5. At the "License Agreement" dialog, read the agreement, then, if you agree, click "I Agree" to continue with the installation.
  6. At the "F/W Loader Firmware Upgrade Utility " screen, follow the instructions, then click "OK" to continue the installation.
  7. At the confirmation page, click "OK".
  8. At the "To start firmware upgrade" screen, click "OK".
  9. At the "Successfully completed" screen click"Exit".
  10. At the "Finished" screen click "Finish".
  11. At the "Program Compatibility Assistant" screen, click "This program installed correctly".
  12. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, then power on the computer.
After the computer restarts, the installation of the Matsu****a® BD-CMB UJ-120B Firmware Update is completed.

Did you shut down the computer and wait 30 seconds? These instructions are for another model but wld be the same.
