I have been getting periodic crashes on my new Dell Vostro 220s. I was offered some assistance a week or so ago but I am afraid that individual was not able to help until I was able to get a mini dump zipped and uploaded. I have tried contacting him or her but to no avail. I wonder if anyone would be willing to help me now that I was able to get "permission" to zip those files?

Thank you

Hi Pursuant,

in your "C:\Windows\Minidump\" folder, right-click the minidump file (.dmp) and choose copy to -> compressed folder.

Then upload that .zip file with your next post.

I have had a look at your .dmp files but they will not load ?

please make sure everything is set like this
to setup minidumps and stop the auto restart ...............
  1. Go to Start and type in sysdm.cpl and press Enter
  2. Click on the Advanced tab
  3. Click on the Startup and Recovery Settings button
  4. Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked
  5. Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box
  6. Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump << where your .dmp files can be found later
  7. Click OK twice to exit the dialogs, then reboot for the changes to take effect.

also please visit the dell support for your Vostro and check your BIOS is the latest version and make sure all of your system devices especially chipset and network card and gfx are updated ?

Ok have done as you suggested, question how do I tell if my bios is up to date? Also I am suppose to go to
%systemroot%\Minidump to find my files? When I typed that in it came to the windows/minidump folder that I have been trying to zip the files from , is that correct?

Thanks for you help..I am also the father of a teenager!

Had a look through your dump files am having issues getting them to load properly as well

All dumps report error 0x9f DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD Index
they all reference the kernel driver but this cannot be the case or you would have much bigger problems

Most of the dumps blame disk.sys as the faulting driver, may be worth running some HDD diagnostics to check the state of the drive http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

You also have some old drivers on your system that could do with updating or removing

Hiya pauly and yes , i was looking at those drivers but they where installed midway through the six crash dumps so cannot be the primary cause ?

my observations are :
windows debugger still wont load these .dmp's but using bluescreenviewer it states this is a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE where the bug check has a value of 0x0000009F. This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.

that would explain why debugger isn't recording the symbols and or driver involved so all your showing is the NT kernel falling over ?

the most significant driver i can see at this point is your realtek driver presumably for your Network Card ?
this looks old to me
Rt86win7.sys 0x8d373000 0x8d398000 0x00025000 0x49a65b16 26/02/2009 09:04:22
and you need to look for a newer version ?

wdcsam.sys is a driver for your external western digital storage device
wdcsam.sys 0x927a3000 0x927a5d00 0x00002d00 0x4805b856 16/04/2008 08:27:02
and needs updating ?

If that doesn't solve the crashes we will need to run driver verifier to force the driver to crash the system, before we do this you must backup your critical data as this could kill your system and your only recovery option could be a fresh install ?

these next drivers may not be significant as they where installed by you after your first two crashes somewhere between the 8th and 18th of feb 2010 you have installed sonic burner by Roxio, are you running this in compatibility mode for XP

these could be causing problems due to the age of the drivers ?

Thanks for the information. I had the hard drive replaced on this machine as Dell did'nt support any software problems just after I bought it, I also had the optical drive replace and the memory. This was their only solution to the problem I was having. I am not sure if this did anything to solve the problem but the hard drive replacement and a fresh 7 install fixed the issue . The blue screen crashes started happening after that. I am beginning to think I got a lemon.

hopefully not , just update that Realtek driver and the WD storage device driver (try manufacturers site) and hopefully the crashes will stop ;)

drivers

I updated the realtek driver but the WD driver seems to be the most up to date one. I used the search function on my pc to look for both.
Thanks for the assistance.
I'll give it a week and see if I have any more crashes, haven't had one in a few days.
Wish me luck

"sonic burner by Roxio, are you running this in compatibility mode for XP" just saw this question. I am not sure what mode I am using it in nor do I know how to tell. I can get rid of this program, if I need to. Please advise.
How do I update that list of drivers that you gave me. Are they all available in device manager?

The list we posted is the list of loaded drivers on your system at the time the crash dump was generated, its quite a big list we have posted the old drivers, pre 2009

there were about 6 or 7 programs associated with Roxio and I uninstalled them all. What do you mean by" and anything else google is the way" ?
Hopefully that will help.

I meant if there's anything else in the driver list that your unsure of quite often googling for them produces answers ;)

I can recommend cdburnerxp if you need a free replacement for your roxio burner although there is a built in windows burner if need ?
