Boot CD?

Was given this link by a friend and was wondering if anyone has used it and how did you like its performance.

Hiren Boot CD is a pretty useful thing, it has all these utilities for fixing myriad problems. Problem with Hiren always was, they used to bundle pirated apps so if you used it, you were effectively pirating. But I believe they've cleaned up now and version 14 include only freeware. Although there are "restore" versions elsewhere on the web which go back to the bad ways, so be careful where you download from.

They keep releasing new versions often. But naturally the AVs wouldnt be updated once you've burnt a disk.

Personally I've never needed to use anything more than the good old system repair disk and free MBAM and maybe free partition wizard for crisis management, for which I dont need Hiren.

If you wish to use a universal boot CD take a look at Ultimate Boot CD - Overview which has never had the "issues" of Hiren's

I put this thread up as I have spent numerous hours on my son and daughter in law's computer(Windows XP Media Center 2005)
They seem to have an attraction for Windows Recovery virus which immediately runs a scan and issues a report of all their computer problems. The catch is one has to pay for the downloaded fix.
They don't have any recovery discs and it pretty much hides all the programs once your run SAS and MBAM.
Running sfc /scannow runs to a certain point then asks for SP3 CD which they don't have.

It is now a clean system and was wondering if the hirens would be ok to use.
Any and all help will be appreciated.

Are the XP files still needed to actually create the bootable disk, like they were when last I used this?

Hi Ted,

The link I gave was for the Linux based one but there is still a separate project that uses XP files to run a windows environment, for obvious reasons I would not recommend that one

Thanks Bill2 and Barman as I will look into those options.

Would it not be best if they made frequent images to set back when they are under attack. I have used Macrium everal times on friends XP systems and it works flawlessly.

I would also move the user data to a seperate partition. That speeds up the imaging of the XP partition and provides additional protection for the data.

I think it is an excellent program. I keep the latest on my utility USB - I just update the latest HBCD folder on the USB for the latest version.
It has DOS, Linux and a Mini XP environments. From the Mini XP environment you can run any windows 32 bit standalone exes. It also has the current Macrium pe environment.

Sure I keep other utilities on the USB but I always have Hirens.

PS: I haven't noticed any dodgy/pirate stuff.
