Solved Boot(?) Display Duration ...

My machine typically takes about 30 seconds to start and finish (includes login w/pass). At every startup of my machine the first display is an HP logo with text defining several keys that represent stuff such as ESC=Setup(?), F10=Boot(?), F??=Safe, etc. yada yada ... .One would think after having this machine 10 years I would know these by heart, but I don't (hence the question marks). Maybe because this screen only displays for, oh, about 1/2 to 1 second. Is there a way to extend the time this screen is displayed?

Are you talking about this...

Click Start => right-click Computer => Properties. In left-hand pane click Advanced System Settings => Advanced tab.

Under Startup And Recovery click Settings.

Increase the Time To Display List Of Operating Systems?

Thx for your reply. Not nearly enough information (most here know me as a non-techno type and in dire need of hand-leading, pictures. illustrations, pointers etc. etc., and the typical 'for dummies' approach to my solutions, sorry if this annoys any one).

Well I for one is unsure as to the screen you are refering to. Do you mean the POST screen, Splash Screen or the Boot Menu?
The POST screen was the first screen a user sees, when they power up any PC. The POST screen used to linger on, during the boot cycle - allowing the user enough time to press a key.

However, the POST screen got replaced by the Logo screen. The Logo screen (also called the "Splash Screen") did not linger on, unlike the POST screen. The idea being that most people were interested in a faster boot cycle to load the OS, rather than accessing BIOS all the time.

But not always. Sometimes users want to access the BIOS regularly, and want to see the return of the POST screen. In which case, such users just need to know how to Disable, or Turn Off, the Splash Screen.
It seems to me that you are getting the 'Logo' Splash Screen very quickly displayed (as it is intended to do), and therefore not seeing the screen options displayed as long as you would wish?

Then, what you have to do is enter BIOS and look for an option to Disable the Splash Screen, or Turn Off Splash Screen. Save the changes to CMOS, and then restart the computer.

Once you have disabled the 'Logo' Splash Screen, then the POST screen returns to the Boot cycle, and you'd be able to see the user options more clearly.

I don't think you can set a 'duration'. I am only aware of options to enable/disable the faster boot via the Splash Screen.

I think someone mentioned looking in your BIOS settings. I set the timeout for showing all available Key Options to about 10 seconds.

However, this is by no means a standardized setting, but it is usually in the Boot Settings area of your BIOS. Look for "Timeout for Boot Options Menu"

It is not the same thing as how the Machine shows your Power On Self test (POST) - This is a different setting.

Well, since that is not really the BIOS screen, I can't really say. Press F10 quickly after the system reboots, see if you can get into your BIOS, that image is actually your boot screen. You say it flashes by quickly? Or does it stay on that screen for a few seconds?

Alright, in that case refer back to my original post. You need to get into BIOS, it's the only way to change that setting. If you can't get in the first try, keep trying. The instant you see that Blue image, press F10, just jab it once nice and firmly. That should get you into your BIOS. If that doesn't do it, try tapping it lightly and quickly about 3-4 times while it is showing that Blue HP Boot image, you may need to start hitting it before that screen even shows. Once you get in, I can show you where to go. You might want to try plugging any USB KB you might have into the system, if F10 is not getting you in. The Hall Effect sensor under the F10 key might have gone bad. I've had to replace the keyboard on my Vostro twice. But for now, using an extra USB Keyboard might get you in there.

Once I 'get in' I doubt I will be able to communicate with you. Perhaps someone can post some images or an image-based tutorial regarding what all goes on in this BIOS world. In the mean time I will scan youtube tutorials. If I can find a do-it-yoursef vid that stepped me thru a single-to-dual exhaust conversion for my truck I hope to find something similar for this.

OK - I mucked about in the BIOS setup environment and was unable to locate anything regarding this 'splash' screen. btw, I googled around for 'splash screen' and it seems there are several interpretations of this term, as well as 'boot screen, logo screen, start screen, bios screen, etc. etc. yada yada. Much overlap of these terms.


No matter, I will use the photo I took of the screen and mark this as 'solved' to terminate further discussion.
