Before I start, I must warn you that all this was typed on my iPod touch. grammar and spelling may not be that good .

My booting errors first occures after i tried to clone my hard drive numerous times. First I tried with windows tools and apps but to avail. Then I tried with Linux and no success, not even dd would work. It always had a I/o error, but always copied about 50% of it .

After the dd failed I tried booting win 7. The boot manager gave me 2 options. Win 7 ult and win 7 ult (recovered) win 7 ult never booted, because it was the half cloned HD. The other loaded but was bugged, had to manually run explored etc.

I then formatted my newer HD and tried booting from the old HD. I must of fine something down the line, because I have all the data etc on the drive,
but there is no boot loader
diskpart cannot see the volume
bcdedit doesn't work
bootrec /fixbbot says element caanot be found
bootrec /scanos cannot find installations

Basically anything I do doesn't work. Can I have some help? How could I get win 7 back?!

Thanks in advanced

I booted up my Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD and I am now in gParted there. Its not looking good, gParted says both Hard Drives are 100% unallocated.
But I know that the 149GB harddrive DOES have data on it, its just that while I was in seven's recovery console I managed to delete the volume.

P.S. I do have another XP machine - So having an iPhone shouldnt be a problem! =)

Sorry for the double post.

Would it be safe to somehow do a dd and copy the 149gb hard drive contents over to the new hard drive? Or would it make things even worse. I would really appreciate some help. I am checking this topic every couple of minutes and am sitting in front of my pc trying to work out the problem.

Hi tj,

Looks very much like the partition table needs rewriting - your data is likely recoverable by using a partition recovery app.

Easier than it sounds.

Try PW boot disc. If it sees the drive, click DIsk 1 at the top , then Partition Recovery in the left pane.

Quick scan should be fine. Tick all the partitions you want to keep. OK, Apply.

If PW doesn't see the drive, use Gparted to create a small partition - a couple of gb is fine, on the Right of the drive - don't forget to Apply.

Then boot PW again - it should see the drive fine now, and do the recovery.

Hope it helps.

PW sees the drive - but no partitions, same as gParted. Both hard drives are still showing as 100% un-allocated.

Disk 0 is the 1TB Samsung Drive
Disk 1 is the 149GB Seagate Drive

Do you think I should go back to gParted and create the 1MB Drive to the right of the 149GB (supposedly) unallocated space? Would this corrupt my data which is on the 149GB Drive?

If PW see the drive - that's fine - no need to use Gparted.

In PW, Click Disk 0 to highlight it.

Clisk Partition Recovery in the Left pane.

Dot Full Disk>Next.

Dot Quick Scan>Next.

When it has found the partitions , tick all the ones you want to recover, OK, Apply.

Repeat for Disk1.

Problem is I cannot select partition recovery, it is greyed out. Probably because it is unallocated.
I used linux's testdisk command to fix my partition table, now when I boot I have 2 instances of win 7. Windows 7 and Windows n7 recovered. They both have errors.

Win 7 has: 0xc0000225, the required device is inaccesible - because i formatted the volume

Win7 recovered has: windows/system32/winload.exe
0xc000000e
application missing or corrupt

UH OH.

See if PW can recover the original partitions now.

Otherwise - you could try a data undelete app. - if there is anything vital on there.

Or just reinstall.

PW does have an option to scan Unallocated space, of course - tho it is n't unallocated now - so try the the other options. Or delete the partition agin , then scan the Unallocated space - you have nothing to lose.

PW Can see the NTFS partition - as can gParted and diskpart. But the problem now is that I cannot boot. I have the error:
windows/system32/winload.exe
0xc000000e
application missing or corrupt

I've tried google, but to no avail! =/

If Diskpart can now see the drive - and if the o/s installation is on there, this will fix it:

Make sure the 7 partition you want to boot is marked Active.

Boot to 7 dvd command prompt, type the following - replace ? with the letter of the 7 partition as seen by Diskpart:

bcdboot ?:\windows /s ?:

then press enter

bootsect /nt60 ?:

then press enter.

Restart

Wow that (sort of) worked!
Before you read the rest, I should let you know that I have unplugged the 1TB Hard Drive, it seems to make it easier.

The commands you gave me definatly helped.

When I boot of the 149GB HArd Drive, The boot manager gives me two options, Windows 7 and Windows 7 Recovered.

Neither of them boot.
Windows 7 gives me an "Autochk program not found - skipping autocheck" and reboot.
Windows 7 Recovered gives me two options - Launch startup repair (Reccomended) & Start Windows Normally.
Startup repair gives me the error 0xc000000e (Required Device Inaccesible)
Normally gives me the same autochk error as the other Windows 7 option.

I can now F8 on the Windows 7 option to give me the normal Advanced Booting Options - I have tried booting in Safe Mode & Last Known Good Config, but both restart.

Any ideas where to go next?

Sorry for double post =/ Edit doesnt work on my iPhone.

I'm so close to fixing it, after spending two full days non-stop working on it.
Windows StartUp Repair on the DVD now says that there are no errors and that the OS should boot.

Now there is no option for me to select an OS, it just boots to Win 7. But I am still getting the autochk error, which reboots my computer.

I have tried all of (Disable Autochk on Startup | Pcman.net) and nothing works.

THis is the last thing getting in my way of a succesfull boot!

Hi guys,

I had similar problem, that windows 7 did not boot after a blue screen while doing some disk operations...
I have 2 HDD in Raid0, thought that i lost it all :)

Using the W7 DVD, here is what I tried (jump directly to the 5th point for solution):

1) Recover system image: failed

2) Startup Repair: failed, although windows was convinced it fixed'em all. Error reported as fixed: The partition tables does not have a valid system partition.

3) Command prompt, then
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
(these last 2 were giving "Element not found")

4) command prompt > chdkdsk /r
i got the message that the disk needs to be locked but cannot be looked due to NTFS permissions... or something similar.

5) command prompt > diskpart > list disk > select disk=0 > list partition > select partition=1 > active > exit
Then restart again using the w7 dvd and at this point I was able to find the installation of windows when selecting Repair from the initial menu.

I tried again the bullets above, 2 & 3 and voila, the system booted and is ok now - I'm not sure which one fixed the issue, probably the combination of both.

Of course, when using diskpart, select based on your disk/partition specific configuration...

SIW2 - restecp, u saved the day!
Tjcrazy - I believe I walked on the same steps as you did. My problem was solved, how about yours?

Im going to be totally honest, It was last year sometime and I cannot fully remember how I fixed my last problem. I remember that I fixed it, but it was much longer way than the one you just posted.

I used a combination of linux and windows 7 cd to fix it.

Hopefully your post can help people in the future ;).

Thanks Sanchomic for posting your recap. After various attempts of fixmbr and the repair boot option, retracing your steps exactly fixed my problem.

My issues started after plugging in my old XP installation to copy files off of and forgetting it was connected while rebooting. Disconnecting it did not fix the fact it neutered my Win7 drive. Typical recovery methods were not working.
