Hello,
I'am new to these forums so please forgive me for any mistakes here. Today I decided to put the HDD that was in my custom computer into my girlfriends older gateway because I have tons of games on my HDD that hers doesnt have.

So I remove hers and put mine in, and I get a green screen with a ton of black pokadots on the monitor. I dont want to mess anything up so I shut it down, get my HDD outta there, and put hers back in. Now the problem is that her HDD wont boot because it says "The file is probably corrupted, checksums dont match" So I figure no problem I'll just reinstall windows or somthing or boot from a windows 7 disc and have better luck. So I do that, and now SOMTIMES it will try to boot from the CD but it will always get stuck somwhere randomly on the loading bar after about 4 seconds and her computer constantly beeps during this. So the problem is I cant boot from her win 7 CD or her HDD. The system is on 64 bit. Please help, I feel terrible for this since she wasnt even here when it happened, I would have just used my computer but the tower is at a friends house, I just had the HDD from it and didnt think it would be a big deal.

Tell her that her hard drive is fried, but as you love her so much you'll replace it ASAP.

You don't get into trouble and she'll think you're a hero!

Download DBAN (darick's Boot And Nuke) and create a bootable CD from the .iso. Boot the CD and at the command prompt, enter autonuke. This will wipe out all the MBR and partition info, making the drive totally unformatted (RAW).

Let it run for a few minutes then remove DBAN CD, put your windows Install CD in then power off and on.

See if the install will work as it should. You should get the "Press any key to install from CD" message, it should just start it automatically.

If it boots okay, partition the drive, format it and complete the install.

"checksums don't match" kind of sounds like a BIOS message. Go into the BIOS and double check that the current hard drive was detected OK. See if its showing the correct size, etc. May want to double check your cable connections too. Another option is to reset the BIOS to fail safe defaults, reboot, and then go back in and set the date time, boot options etc. If the hard drive really is bad this won't help, but if the BIOS glitched during your hard drive swap this may save you from having to buy a new one. If the checksum error is a BIOS message and you keep getting it over and over consider replacing the motherboard BIOS battery.
