Hello. I am very excited to start using the first computer I have ever built, and I have gotten to the BIOS setting, so I was hopeful. However, after checking that the system booted from the CD/DVD drive and then to the hard drive, I received the error message "Bootmgr image is corrupt. System can not boot."

I am installing Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a new build. I have 8GB of RAM, an msi A88X-G43 motherboard, a gtx 750 ti graphics card, an amd x4 750k processor, and a Western Digital 1TB hdd.

This is my first time building a computer, but I did research other help threads about the same message. While most other threads relied on using windows startup recovery, I can't do that because I don't have an operating system installed yet. Other threads pointed toward having to format your hdd beforehand, but I only put it in the case as is. Could that have something to do with it?

You need to make sure you have a working Win7 install disc (check on another PC to ensure its not corrupt in some way)

You need to ensure your CD drive actually works and is plugged in correctly ie sata data and power cables tightly secured

Ensure BIOS boots to CD/DVD drive first

If all the above are set correctly and in good working order, you should be able to boot from CD and start your install. I'm assuming you didn't save your BIOS settings correctly or your install disc is bad.

The error means its skipping the DVD and trying to boot the empty hard drive. Follow Gator's suggestions above to get the DVD to boot.

Where did you get Win7? How is the disk burned?

Windows Disk just came in the mail yesterday new from Microsoft, so I'm assuming it's not a bad disk.

I'll check the connections to the optical drive.

I set the BIOS settings so that it booted from the cd/dvd drive followed by the hard drive, but I'll try to reset the settings.

After checking the sata and power cables to the optical drive, I am sure that they are secure. Rearranging the boot order from the "CD/DVD Drive" followed by the hdd to the "UEFI CD/DVD Drive" followed by the HDD allowed windows to start loading files before I got hit with an error on the "\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe" file (status 0xc0000001) which prompted the message "The selected entry cold not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." It also told me to reboot, but rebooting brought me back to the "bootmgr is missing" error again.

This disk came from Microsoft in the mail yesterday. It's not an old disk, and although I'm doubtful something fresh out of the envelope would be corrupted, but it's possible. Unless, of course, there is another fix. Thank you for your help.

What are the BIOS settings choices and present setting for Secure Boot, CSM, Legacy BIOS and any other UEFI settings? Pictures will help.

There is a newer version of the BIOS for my motherboard (here). I'm currently running 3.4 and there is a 3.5 available, but I'm not sure how to install it without an operating system.

I tried following the guide you posted, but attempting to boot in UEFI mode (UEFI CD/DVD drive followed by the hard drive) gave a different error message: "The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum." Rebooting and trying a again resulted in my first error about the bootmgr.

Each of the icons along the top is a tab you can click to check the settings. Look for CSM, Legacy BIOS, Legacy anything, etc. Post back pictures if in question.


Read the Manual on the Support Downloads webpage for your exact mobo or PC mode for guidance on settings and installing another OS. Does it require resetting to Legacy defaults - look for the reset choices, too.

Read also the download information and any included Read Me file in download for latest BIOS to see what exactly it fixes or changes.


Where did you get Win7? How is it burned? Try the latest official installer for your version burned to disk with tool from Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

The only mention of "legacy" I could see in my BIOS was this:

Reading the manual told me that it's important to reset to default settings if you're having trouble installing, but default settings yielded the same error as I had originally.

The readme file was skimpy on text, and a newer version (3.4 to 3.5) would only do these things:

- Update AMD AGESA code.
- Improved Memory compatibility.
- Improved VGA(D-Sub) monitor compatibility.

To install it, my manual tells me I can install it with a usb, I think.

I bought windows 7 from Microsoft through Amazon. I'm not sure how it's burned, to be honest. I'm thinking of calling Microsoft.

Not a single setting on any tab for Compatibility, CSM, UEFI or Legacy? That would be unusual.
