Bootmgr is missing - different from others

many users, including me, get the message 'bootmgr is missing' but it seems their situations are different, so the suggested solutions don't work for me or are simply not understandable for a non-expert like me.

i have a brandnew netbook, acer aspire 1410, with windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed - not on disc. external acer cd/dvd-drive.
after installing several programs i used window's disk management to make a partition on the harddisk: shrinked c for system/programs, d for data. had to restart, then got 'bootmgr is missing'.

i googled, found a way to use imgburn to burn a windows 7 64 bit repair disc.
changed the netbook's bios to boot from the dvd. one time something happened: windows was loading files, asked me for a repair, told me problems were found and windows would repair them. but not.
after new restart: same error message again. rebooting again from the repair dvd not possible. most of the time it is not recognized. burning a second dvd didnt help. sometimes there is first a message 'memory overflow error', after that 'bootmgr is missing'.

if it is missing, is there any other place where i can find 'it' (what exactly?), copy it and then put it... where? how?

i have another acer laptop, with windows vista 32 bit. is there anything in there i could copy to the new netbook?

or any other solution?
i could consider to reset everything to factory settings, but then i loose all my already installed programs/settings.

please be simple in your answer... or i will not understand.

thanks,
wim

When you created the new paritition, it must have damaged or moved the MBR resulting in the error you are receiving.

You need to be able to boot the Win7 Repair CD, select Repair and click through to Recovery Tools to select Startup Repair, run it up to 3 separate times with reboots as it will attempt to repair before rewriting the MBR.

Check your BIOS setup again to make sure the CD drive is still set to boot first, otherwise look for the key given on first bootup screen for Boot Menu to trigger CD boot.

If CD will not boot, then download the Repair console from the link below and write the .iso file to a flash stick using UltraISO trial version as given here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

Repair console ISO download: Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files

Once you get Win7 started, if you will post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map we can look it over from any problems for you. Use Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using paper clip in reply box.

problem solved, thanks!
the problem was apparently that the newly created dvd with the repair console did not run - or was stuck, constantly running without doing anything. after a lot of attempts it was finally loading windows files, from there everything went smooth as described!
thanks again.

If you want to post back a Disk Mgmt screenshot we can tell you if something was set up incorrectly with your data partition and could possibly cause you trouble in the future.

How many runs of Startup Repair were required to get your Win7 started?

hi,

attached you find the partition screenshot. i am not an expert at all, but don't see anything that could cause trouble.

it took me numerous attempts before the recovery dvd started installing windows files. altogether it did that twice. after the first attempt nothing changed, after the second attempt all was (and is) ok.

i know there is an option to mark this thread as 'solved' but i cannot find where. can u do it? thanks again
