All i can remember is, i have a hp pavilion dv5, 4gb of RAM, my hard drive was 500GB, manufactor was hp, i was running 64 bit windows 7. All my ram was working fine, need anything else?

No, it's a desktop running windows 7 64bit, 3gb of ram, but its by hp too.

Forgive an old fool for being so slow. It is understood that when a machine is down, one wants it back up and running now. My thoughts are along the line of cloning the recovery partition and imaging the drive. However, if the drive has bad sectors (failing), then of course a new drive would be in order.
Get the key and OS that came on the machine and off you go.
Was Vista originally installed? There are several series of dv5....
I have found CloneZilla a great image/clone tool. It is not the most user friendly, but it gets the job done and IMO is dependable.
There are options to manually boot the recovery partition, but I have never tried them and wouldn't sugget it until I have had a chance to produce positive results. I'll give it a try when I get the chance.... I am sure someone around here has experience with manually booting partitions?~?
