Hello-

Posted in the General forum earlier- forgive me for not investigating this special BSOD section.

Upon exiting a YouTUBE video full screen (accessed via Facebook) this morning, I got an instant BSOD.

I have a new machine, W7 Pro SP1 x64, i7-4790 Haswell HD4600, and 2 x 8GB G. Skill RipjawsX DDR3-1600

installed. The memory has passed both Windows Memory Diagnostics and Passmark MemTest86.

The CPU has passed Intel CPU Diagnostics and the HDD passed SeaTools Short and Long tests. Of note, the

HP Diagnostics at Boot (F2), the memory failed the short test, however, depending who you believe, the

code did not point to the RAM.

I plan on installing dedicated Graphics and bigger PSU a bit down the road.

Attached is the .zip file of the diagnostics you requested.

Thanks, in advance, for any help you may afford me.

Kind Regards-

tim

Thank you, Arc-

The problem I have is that this is an OEM HP Envy 700-515xt CTO machine, and the Driver is

custom tailored to HP's specs...according to HP. If the Driver you suggest above is the .4029, then yes, I

have tried it and got the crash and recover pop-up (screen briefly goes blank and comes back on).

I just updated the Driver and Chipset from HP Driver and Software Downloads and they say the latest,

correct version for this machine is the .3995 issue. What should I do?... download the one you suggest,

uninstall current one in Device Manager and reinstall your suggestion?...

I was thinking along the same lines you are as far as the Code you have listed- 'dxgkrnl.sys+2d906.

Sure appreciate such a rapid response- Thank you!

UPDATE:

Hi, Arc-

Here's what happens when I uninstalled Driver from HP Update and attempted to install your recommendation-

View attachment 363823

So, we went back to HP Drivers and Downloads and got the latest one (what I had), here-

And verified here-

To reiterate, the YouTUBE video I was watching on Facebook was enhanced to Full Screen mode,

because it was such a killer video(!), and the only thing I did was tap the Esc key, hoping to return to

my Timeline and- BINK!- BSOD.

Truly don't know what else to do.

The issue is being caused by the installed graphics driver.

Now, you are using a custom driver supplied by OEM, which is not the latest one. And OEM's customization is not allowing you to install the latest driver.

If you have checked the link, you could notice that it is not .4029 but .4222.

Now, in this situation you need to break OEM's customization and to allow windows 7 at its native performance, which will give you more stability.

Do a clean reinstall of windows following http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html .... follow it step by step to allow windows update to install the necessary drivers for you. Hopefully it will cure your issue.

Thanks for the reply, Arc....

'If you have checked the link, you could notice that it is not .4029 but .4222.'-

Yes, I am very well aware of that... the .4029, which was prior Intel release installed but crashed and

restarted frequently. The latest from Intel, .4222, as you can see, will not install at all due to HP code.

'Do a clean reinstall of windows following Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .... follow it step by step to allow windows update to install the necessary drivers for you.'

Arc, no can do, as I don't have Windows 7 source disk other than Recovery Media that I burned from

within the OS, and of course, the D:\ Recovery Partition. I do have a single DVD of Windows 7

Professional SP1 x64 that I downloaded from Digital River before M$ stopped that. The issue is the

SHA1 Hash does NOT align with the version installed on this machine.

Always open to any more ideas you may have. I'm sure there must be a way of breaking the HP code

throughout this installed OS, but that is waaay above my pay grade!...:roflmao: ;)

Thanks!-

The Hash most likely does not match because HP always includes advertising and HP programs with it. The Digital River ISO should be the clean version.

Tim on a slightly different tack mate try my ditty and post back a shot of the readout (I believe in starting down in the basement for faults ;))

UsingHW Info

PART A:

You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 -Download < download the right bit version andclose the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power sectionwhere you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton) with VBATT is a dead give awayyou are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titlesand one that pops up often is ITE

Now the voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/-of what is required or the machine will not work properly if at all.

See this for the rail voltage info

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,3061.html (Section 2.)

The original right hand window shows the machine running and ishandy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it anduse the main left hand side panel

FOR OTHERCOMPONENTS

PART B:

Open each small square with + in it on the section the componentsare in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the righthand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and otheressential info that particular device. See pic for example.
Use PART A:

The other thing is if you are using Intel graphics maybe you could have a look at the settings in there

HINTS ON ADJUSTING INTEL GRAPHICS ON LAPTOPS

If you areusing or can only use the Intel graphics in your laptop machine (some laptopsnow have dual graphics chips ie Intel for general use and NVidia for heavy use– gaming etc) and want to use two monitors – for example a larger one with alaptop, and the “secondary” monitor ie the larger one the screen needs scalingthat is to get the screen within the monitor’s screen (bezel) edges – read on.

NB if you are changing the aspectfor the larger “secondary’ monitor you must first do this.

Start > Control Panel > “Display” > “MultipleDisplays” > click “Show desktop onlyon 2” (this will cut out the primary machine screen while you are adjusting thelarger monitor and not change the machine’s own screen aspect ration

IFit gives you an option for a different resolution – for example the largermonitor is 1920x1080 then change that however if the laptop for example onlysupports 1600x900 then it might not be capable of doing that.

This worksreally well with recently manufactured Intel graphic chips and those machinesthat have the update from this link https://downloadcenter.intel.com/ this link gives one the best available graphics from Intel atthis time.

Now you haveto pick out the driver after checking this link out and for example my link formy Asus ROG gaming laptop was https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=4th+Generation+Intel%c2%ae+Core%e2%84%a2+Processors+with+Intel%c2%ae+HD+Graphics+4600

STEP 1.

On the plaindesktop right click and it will give you a window with some options.

STEP 2.

Click onGraphicsProperties” - that will open the “Intel graphics control panel”as per pic (takes few seconds).

STEP 3.

Click on “Display”– and select ‘Customise Aspect Ratio” - there will be two sliders onefor horizontal and one for vertical.

Click holdon each one and slide them in their respective directions until you see theedge of the screen come in from the edge of the monitor bezel and them justslide them back to where they are sitting exactly where you want them.

Then - click “Apply” and then it will askyou if you want to keep this configuration – click “OK”– it is done!!

You also get the option to save the settings in a dedicated file- I just named mine ASPECT BENQ -for this particular monitor. This so if I use another brand monitor and havechange back to the Benq for any reason I can hit that file and the settingsshould be applied – I have not needed to do this but it makes sense that iswhat will happen.

You can still use both monitors if desired by altering the Control Panel > Display (as above procedure) and setting it to use both screens –the laptop screen will not have changed from it’s default settings.
See pics
I think this will apply to desktops too my pics are for adjusting the screen sizing but there are I'm sure more adjustments than that - have not had time to test them all out just yet

OK, essenbe, I guess I was misled- the .iso I have that was supposedly from Digital River has a

different hash. So that's out.

The only other option would be to buy an OEM disk from newegg.com. I am not happy with HP and

would like to get away from them.

My intent down the road a bit is to install a SSD and migrate this OS. Any other solutions are certainly

welcomed.

Thanks!

ICIT2LOL, this is a mess this HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download.

It installs and then wants to Update, and then it won't run.

I give up.

I'll nose around a bit on the internet and report back.

Thanks for the help.

For the life of me, I can't get HWiNFO to run more than once. And toggling between it and your instrctions is impossible. So, I ran CPUID HW Monitor...does this help?

If the ISO is from Digital River, I am sure it is OK. If you bought the OS from Microsoft, that is where you would have downloaded it from. Other than that, If you know anyone with the exact same OS as you have, any disk will work, as long as it is Windows 7 Professional X64 SP1.

Hiyya Tim mate I know it always says there is an update and all you need to do is shut it off and close that pair of smaller windows which leaves you with the large one like in my pics
I know it is a nuisance that it disappears when you minimize it but it takes so little time to fire up I don't let it bother me.;)

The alternative is to tick Do not remind about updates in that initial window see pics - hope I have them in order:p

If the ISO is from Digital River, I am sure it is OK.

essenbe, that's just it... I'm questioning weather or not that it is. A year or so ago, I got a .zip file from Daz, the guy who made that loader that 'fooled' any copy of Windows to report as active, and he assured me it was clean. I also had downloaded the Digital River issue, which I was aware came right from MS. One of them has disappeared. Quite frankly, I can't remember how I checked the hash on this install on my machine- the factory installed version. I can tell you one thing, it did NOT come from a torrent download.
I have been hounding HP for a disc, so I can install cleanly on an SSD. All they offer is a 4 disc set of recovery dvd's, which I have already made from within Windows. This pc is 6 wks. old and I have had to do Recovery's two times already. I have absolutely NO idea how the files system keeps getting corrupted.

Thanks-

ICIT2LOL, I apologize for my impatience. I went back and downloaded the portable version of HWiNFO rather than the .exe and it works fine and is 'reusable' now. So, this machine has an OEM mobo made by MSI and here is a screenshot of the sensor screen for the HP/MSI board with the VBAT voltages.

A bit down the road, when I install a Graphics Card, I am going to install a new PSU, as I have never found decent reliability in these Chinese OEM units. Check this out:

EVGA - Products - EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G1 Power Supply - 120-G1-0750-XR

However, an SSD is coming before a Graphics Card:

SAMSUNG 850 PRO MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

Back to present- Regarding your 'Part B- Other Components' section, what exactly am I looking for?... there is a shit ton of info there. I see nothing out of the ordinary regarding Memory, for example. And the adjusting of the Intel Graphics, in my case is irrelevant. By the way, this machine is an Envy desktop, not a laptop. Here's Graphics and Monitors properties, via Intel and HWiNFO:

As far as getting Drivers and what not directly from Intel- it just doesn't work. They have not been signed for use by HP and simply will not install. ALL Drivers are up to date via the HP updater.
This will absolutely be the last time I ever buy an OEM machine. The OEM's lock the endpoint consumer down so hard that it's virtually impossible to do anything on these machines. BIOS is a good example, too. I have UEFI, but NO graphic interface. It appears that the AHCI drivers are installed and online (for SSD) and are running the present HDD, rather than DMA.
No, my Windows 10 build will be from the ground up- with a Full Retail version of the OS. Screw this OEM BS!

So, what do you want me to do from here?... Haven't had a crash since this last one, and the Display Adapter Driver hasn't crashed and restarted lately, either. I suppose that it's entirely possible the PSU is fluctuating- the rail voltage glitching along a constant wave form, and/or piss poor filtering. It would be extremely clever if one could snap shot the PSU performance graphically at the time of such an anomaly- I know of nothing that can do that. I've seen that happen on OEM machines and cause all kinds of issues. Cheap Chinese junk, that's what it is.

At any rate, I appreciate the help y'all are giving me... Have a great weekend!

Regards-

tim

Of further note, the 1600x900 resolution is far easier on my aging eyes than the 1920x1080. Admittedly, the latter is sharper and better defined, but the elements are just too small for me.

Sorry for the lack of organization on this thread- that happens when juggling several projects at once.

Thanks, yet again!

UPDATE:

As far as the Display Adapter Crash and Recover fault goes, we have tried 2 changes. The Event is 4101 'igfx'. So, I have disabled Windows Aero theme, which I'm not happy about, and enabled Basic. Secondly, we have made a couple of Registry changes:

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\GraphicsDriver', and
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\GraphicsDriver'

After backing up those two keys, we added a NEW QWORD= 'TdrDelay' and gave it an '8' for Data Value. This will add to the Windows native value of '2', thus give a total delay of 10 secs. for the Driver to stabilize prior to a crash and recover. I might be way off base here, but what the heck- we'll see!... If it still keeps occurring, then we'll edit 'TdrDelay' to 'TdrLevel', set the value to '0', and delete the 'TdrDelay'.

Please feel free to opine on this... Thanks!

Kind Regards-

tim

Ok Tim although I cannot see the 12v rail the others look ok. Now if you are thinking of renewing the PSU or starting from scratch then this is a fairly good guide as it gives you a good idea and builds in a measure of "width" of the range usually a tad more than is needed.
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator - The only power supply calculator trusted by PSU manufacturers and computer enthusiasts

Yes mate I have the same problem with resolution and I have been wanting to get a new monitor to go with the laptop that runs 1920x1080 and it all comes down to pixel pitch in my view ie the smaller the pixel pitch count the more pixels you have per square inch. But like you with a 24" I still see the squared pixels at 1920x1080 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot_pitch
So if you go looking for monitors Tim I have taken to look for the ones that give the lowest pixel pitch count.

Thanks, 'I See It Too :haha: ', ... I have found yet another Display Adapter Driver update and installed it. Now, I am working on a System Restore issue- it's not setting automatic restore points. That's another story, and I just initiated a new thread over in the General category, if you feel like following it.

Yes, thanks for that article link on mapping PSU requirements... I like that technical stuff! My feeling on PSU's is a) Don't go cheap, and b) throw the watts at her- in other words, go beyond what you need- reasonably!

A friend of mine just bought a new monitor. He bought an LG brand, spent around $250 (US) and it's 23", 1080p. He likes it, but has nowhere near the GPU to realize potential. On mine, set at 1920x1080, I don't see any pixelation- the res quality is exceptional- but the images (icons, etc) and type are just too dang small. I do understand, and it's rather logical, your point on the pixel pitch count.

I sure appreciate your input, friend... I'll most likely be hitting you up to opine on SSD installation. I do have to get THIS OS stable and noncorrupt before I do a migration. I want to migrate the Recovery Partition, too. Anyway, a bit later on that deal.
