Hi,

I have for about 6 months now been experiencing ‘random’ BSODs relating to 0x000000f4.
This has gotten so bad that 2 weeks ago I did a full clean install of Win 7 64 ultimate having previously updated all my BIOS, Firmware etc. to latest versions and am running latest drivers and updates for everything else.
I have replaced all my RAM and reconfigured the PCIe order of my GPU and Revo to a variety of set ups.
I have tried running basics installs with minimum Software, am running completely new A/V software and tried stabilising my BIOS by setting fixed voltages and removing Marvell driver components (neither have worked – I had read these may be issues).
Nothing has worked and I am getting so annoyed I might go and buy an iMac

As for the system, main hardware parts as follows (all have latest drivers, bios, firmware etc):

CPU = Intel i7 980x
MOBO = ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme
RAM = Corsair Dominator GT 2000 3 x 4Gb
Primary Drive = OCZ Revodrive 3 X2
Other Drives = 1x OCZ Vertex 2 + 2x WDC Raptors (mk2s)
GPU = Asus GTX580 Direct Cu II
Blu Ray = 2 x LG

Software I have kept to a minimum ATM to make things easier on myself (all latest patches):

Existing
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
Office 2010 64bit
Skype
Citrix Xenapps
EaseUS BackUp
iTunes
Frostwire

New
Webroot

What happens is fairly typical and will always be from a cold standing boot, usually the machine has not been active for about an hour. The PC boots up as normal Windows loads and then anywhere from about 1 – 5 mins the screen starts to freeze up, the mouse moves but programs stop responding. . then graphics go a bit weird, task bar disappears etc and then BSOD.
Once I reboot after this its fine . . no problem, but that’s not the point and I feel I have tried everything and am not getting any closer to either a culprit or a solution.
I've been watching Event Viewer like a hawk to see what is happening . . as follows is a highlight form the last week and a new Crash dump from an hour ago, there is never any Warning / Error / Critical logged prior to one of these crashes (after boot up). Ironically this time I was actually looking as Event Viewer and waiting for the logs to load, that’s when it crashed . . someone clearly has a sense of humour, but it’s not me anymore !

This is the latest BSOD message

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000f4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xfffffa800c3e0630, 0xfffffa800c3e0910, 0xfffff800041d88b0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 021812-18876-01.

These are errors seen over the last few days . . . none of which happened before the crash as noted above and no crashes ever seemed to happen in their vicinity, but they could be indicative. .my gut feeling is its something to do with one of the drives but they have all been tested and seem to be working fine.

Duplicate entry wasn't posted . . so I reattach the new diagnostrics files

Also anyone aware of issues with a Cyberlink 'RichVideo64' Service . . I was activating / deactivating that yesterday after an earlier 'Information' in Event Viewer suggested there may be a corruption here (no Errors of Warnings tho).

I deactivated after the first crash yesterday but reactivated again when I relaised it was rather obviously called on running the PowerDirector program (which re intialised it), it was on'ly after this that the second crash happened last night. So, I deactivated again yesterday and when I turned on the machine this morning, it started fine .. co-incidence ? possibly, will wait and see - as ever.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's recently. Here's the information that I've compiled:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.-
Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum

Back a year or so ago we had a lot of issues with M-Audio devices. Please be sure those drivers are updated to the latest available version.

Recently, at work, we've seen issues with Webroot software. Please uninstall it to see if that's the cause (remember to always use an antivirus), then download and install the latest available version if you wish to continue using it.

Your network drivers date from 2008. Please visit the PC manufacturer's website and download/install the latest version.

Lot's of I/O Errors in the memory dumps. It's either:
- issues with the SSD
- issues with the controllers (especially the one controlling the SSD)
- issues with other hard drives

Please run all diagnostics that you might have for the SSD. Then run these free diagnostics on ALL of your other hard drives: HD Diagnostic

Further info on BSOD error messages available at: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs:
3RD PARTY DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please either update the older drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.
- Please feel free to post back about any drivers that you are having difficulty locating.
- Windows Update exceptions may be noted below for Windows drivers.

Hey so I removed Webroot, updated intel drivers and ran a verifier . . crash dump is attached as it crashed again.

I have read a number posts about crashes that only heppen after a cold boot and they are suggesting possibilities that had occurred to me , being that this feels like a hardware issue, maybe heat related or power drain related . .

Its the fact this only happens after the PC has been shut down for a bit . I can turn off the machine for 30 mins at least and turn back on again and not see this issue, I am not aware of any services or drivers that would start differently depending on how long the machine had been switched off . .

So could be a PSU issue maybe or a Mobo issue, I see many comments suggesting its the RAM but then I've removed sticks, switched them round and then replaced the lot . . changed the BIOS etc . .maybe its a circuit issue that becomes fixed once the Mobo hits a certain temp . . a short contact or something ?

Then my other observations is that everyone I have seen is running 64bit . . coincideince ?

Still struggling for answers, what I find curious is that this seems regular enough that there are many posts on such behaviour . . I'd love to hear form anyone who has found other fixes there must be one !

....

Oh yeah one more thing that may provide a clue, all my saved user IDs for websites etc are blanked / logged out which doesn't happen when there is no crash, eg iGoogle.

I too have had problems, and they seem to be mostly when I have a cold start. It's gotten to the point where I boot up my PC in the morning when I leave for work. Let it crash and restart on it's own and hopefuly I'll have a running computer when I get home. This will work for a little bit, but inevitably it will progressively get worse over time and I'll eventually be forced to format and reinstall and start all over... again. I think on my next reinstall I'm going to turn off all windows updates and see if this helps.

Good luck with that, I'll be sure to keep posting on any progress around this, its weird, there is a part of me which instinctively feels this is related to an Hardware / heat component . . . but the next time I feel I need to reinstall I am definitely going to run 32bit instead.

A New GPU driver has been released today for my setup . . so . . lets see what that does :)

Hey, OK been working through the hardware check lists .. had memtest running all day with no issues, however that was after it crashed this mornign so will kick it off cold tomorrow AM and see whats what.

Have run Disk checks which found nothing and fur mark which also ran fine.

Was running Intel Diagnostic checks however and did experience a BSOD but this time it was 7a . . never had one of those before . . Ran the Intel Diagnostic processes again and it passed fine . . have attached the new dump incase it sheds any more light . . many thanks

This is a hardware error blaming your hard drive. Make sure that you've run the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics on your Raptors and the OCZ tools on your SSD's. Make sure the firmware on both SSD's is updated - and that you have the latest controller drivers from the controller manufacturer's website:
Intel® ICH10R controller :
6 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), gray
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
JMicron® JMB363 controller :
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), green
1 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), black
Marvell® PCIe 9128 controller : *2
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), red
Update the Intel controller drivers from http://downloadcenter.intel.com

Update JMicron controller drivers from here: ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Windows/
Get both eSATA and the regular SATA

Since we noted previously that there may be a problem with the Marvell controller drivers, avoid using your SSD's on those channels (the red ports on the mobo). Updates (if any) are available at the Asus support website for your motherboard.

OCZ 10xx SCSI Controller Driver is present in the dumps - do you have a separate board that controls the SSD's? If not, then this driver must be associated with the drive itself. Check the OCZ website to see if there's any updates available (I did and I don't think that there are any updates).

OK thanks, Marvell ports were not / are not being used.
I think there was actually a drivier update for the Vertex SSD.
JMicron controllers wouldn;t install, seemed to be looking for SCSI drives
the OCZ SCSI in the controller on my Revodriver so is intergrated and is on the latest version and BIOS

No idea which intel drivers to select . .there are a lot : )

fingers crossed to see if it was that Vertex driver

OK . . didn't want to jinx things too soon by claiming all was fixed . . it worked perfectly for 5 days after making changes above.

I even left it for over 48 hours between boots and it all worked perfectly . .

until last night when I turned it on after getting back home from work . . then again this morning . . and again this evening . . .

Am dumbfounded, its gone from being fixed back to its old self again with even more regularity. I can't think of anything that had been installed or changed, no system updates until tonight.

Dump attached. :(

Still looks like SSD or it's controller
Install Windows on a regular (platter based) hard drive to see if that fixes it (remove the SSD)

So . . the mother of all crashes at the end of last week . . wife was using the pc and it bombed out then when it booted back up it went into a full CHKDSK run which lasted about 8 hours. Afterwhich I couldn't even boot up onto the drive . . . total corruption

So very clearly was the Revo Drive !!! It is going back for a refund . . .

Have since installed a Samsung 830 SSD 256Gb which by all accounts is rock solid and installed all the software that was on the revodrive . . and am happy to report that all looks good, not even had a slight error or warning in over 48 hours

Its not the fastest SSD by alla ccounts but it seems pretty darn quick to me and that fact its not marvell or sandforce drivers was my main attraction. Considering the old revo used to add about 20 secs to my boot up time as it initialised, my boot tiome now is much faster about 30sec for the BIOS load and 10secs for full windows load.

http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_ssd_830_review_256gb

Will provide some more updates over the next few weeks which will hopefully all be positive !

Thanks for all your help and time
