BSOD 0x116 & 0x7E

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv6-6c80el with AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT.
After installing new OS, I couldn't find any good driver for the GPU, I haven't the 'Recovery' disk so I can't access to the old ones.
I have installed the latest Intel HD graphics and AMD drivers but while I'm playing games, using some programs, watching video, it crashes and appear 'Display driver stopped...." due to AMD video card.

Searching on the net about AMD drivers someone said that is better using the 6700 series drivers. The problem isn't solved.

Sometimes BSOD with there 2 codes: 0x116 or 0x7E

I tried both modes Dynamic and Fixed with no result.


In the HP support forum someone told me to post this problem here, I hope to solve it!

Hi Tarzy.

Though you have explained the issue very well and made it almost clear, still it is better to check at least one crash dump before starting torubleshooting.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup program before you upload another zip.

I looked at your dump files and both dumps were exactly the same:

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck.  Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem.  Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003.  This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG.  This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG.  This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

That is your avast! Self Protection Driver

I would suggest you uninstall Avast then use their uninstall utility https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility to clean up any leftover components, the install Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows) to replace it. Let me know if your BSOD problems improve afterwards.

I don't know either. You do hve one, so obviously your computer is configured for Small Memory dumps,

Just in case you didn't notice. Both of those are Avast, just like the previous ones.

It does also show both your Graphics drivers. The internal Graphics and the Dedicated driver.

Could Microsoft Security Essentials replace Avast instead?

Yes, that is the idea. Whether it is as good as Avast is the subject of many a debate. I used it for years and never had any problems. The big advantage with MSE is that it is the only Anti Virus which has never been known to cause a BSOD. Right now, that is our objective.
