Update - All is Not Well

The beeping I'm talking about refers to a series of beeps usually before a crash. Last night I shut down my system and this morning it took about 30 reboots before it fully started. First it stopped at the dell window, then at Starting Windows, then at Starting Windows with the logo.

Yesterday I made a bootable copy of the Win 7 64-bit Home Premium iso 58997 (from Digital River) using the Win & USB DVD Download tool. I'm backing up everything right now. I also have a repair disk made from this system.

Can you think of any additional diagnostics to perform? What would suggest as next steps? Can we rule out the hardware before I wipe the drive and reinstall - although that's an appealing option at this point.

Please accept my apology for jumping in. The beeping could be a sign of a failing motherboard. Especially in light of the numerous reboots. You'll need to know the manufacturer of the motherboard because each manufacturer uses different beep codes. It might be hard to do if you can't boot the system because you'll most likely need to install some software to read your computer's hardware. Many folks recommend a free product called Speccy.

Full MSE Scan Results

I've attached a screenshot - apparently I had three vulnerabilities that had been installed with Java. Here's the Oracle info -

Alert for CVE-2012-4681

So that's now ruled out. I'm hoping that my motherboard doesn't have to be replaced - this was an $1800 system 4 years ago that was completely replaced by Dell 2 years ago with a different model - after complaining the the Better Business Bureau.

Still Having Problems - System Hangs During RStartup

These error message are from the event log:

12:11 AM The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:.

7:35 AM The previous system shutdown at 12:45:59 AM on ‎10/‎17/‎2012 was unexpected.

System got to Resuming Windows and hung

7:34 AM The system was shut down due to a critical thermal event.
Shutdown Time = ‎2012‎-‎10‎-‎17T11:34:00.086025600Z
ACPI Thermal Zone = ACPI\ThermalZone\TZ01
_CRT = 358K (yes - this log entry is 1 minute earlier even though it appears later in the System log)


7:34:11 The LoadUserProfile call failed with the following error:
The media is write protected.

Then there are about 50 messages that are about services failing to start due to media being write protected or due to a dependency failure.

I haven't gotten a BSOD in a while. Any thoughts?

One of the Forum experts prepared a couple of troubleshooting tutorials that may help sort all of this out. They are time consuming. But they've also helped many people figure out their computer problems (both software and hardware.)

My concern right now is even if you did a clean install, if this turns out to be a hardware issue, the problem(s) will most likely return. Considering how many days you've already invested, a couple more probably won't hurt too much to see if the underlying issues can be found.

New Issue - Catalyst Control Center No Longer Opens

This used to work prior to my updating the driver for my graphics card. I see the process in the Task Manager for a moment - ccc.exe - and then it disappears.

Any thoughts?

I will definitely review the tutorials you've cited. I just don't see how a hardware error could be so intermittent. I think that when I do a restart all is file. It's when the system goes to sleep the problem occurs.

Hi there.

I've started going through the troubleshooting suggestions in the link you provided and came across this info under Performance Issues and Tools - see attached screenshots.

I've lowered the resolution on my attached flat-screen to the recommended 1280 x 720.

I'd like to offer a few suggestions and then get out of the way.

penTechbiz,
As you're going through the tutorials, note what you observe - as you did above. The two USB Mass Storage drivers are slowing down your system. It is reported as slowing down sleep/hibernation time. The time these two devices add are about 2 1/2inutes - that's forever! So I would read the event details and disable those two drivers.

I would also disconnect any external devices and evaluate the system. BSODs are natures way of protecting the system - usually hardware related, although software accessing the hardware can also cause problems. Eliminate the easy things first, then dig deeper with dumps if the problem continues.

I sometimes forget to mention that an up-to-date system runs better.
Windows Update and current Drivers from the manufacturer is my prescription. I don't trust so-called Driver Download sites and I've had mixed results with Windows Driver updates. Sometimes though the only place to get a Windows 7 driver is from WHQL.

You mention sleep a number of times. i.e. no BSOD for a while, then the machine sleeps and BSOD.
suggest turning off hibernation and running MSE scan again.

Command Prompt - run as administrator
powercfg -h off

I might be a little more help....

Dell Studio XPS 1645 drivers site.

There is an Urgent Bios update A06, dated 02/02/2010. You might consider checking the Bios version on your machine. Don't update it yet - just check it and report it.
Edit: there's also A13 dated 04/07/11

Koolkat and Marsmimar are running this issue. I'm just applying what I already know to what I learn about particular issues - termperature sensors and system response.

Status Update - Steps I've Taken

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

This is where my system stands at this point:

1. It turns out that I do have that Urgent Bios update A06 installed.
2. I've unplugged my USB hub, thus losing my external Iomega hard drive and camera.
3. I have a Logitech wireless transmitter plugged in that connects my keyboard and trackball.
4. I still have a Samsung Syncmaster monitor attached as my primary and a Coby flat-screen TV as my secondary for streaming video.
5. I have turned off hibernation using powercfg -h off
6. I've set up a custom power plan in which, while my system is plugged in, the monitor never dims or turns off and the system never sleeps.

I will shut down later and see what happens in the AM. I haven't seen a BSOD today. It's still a bit wonky though.

I'd like to see the laptop running without any externals attached until your system is more stable.
- no monitor, no HDMI.

If the monitor is the only way the machine will come up, then reconnect it.

Status Update & Indexing Question

No - I just prefer the laptop off to the side and the two monitors on my desk. I work on the SyncMaster and stream to the Coby flat screen - usually not at the same time unless I'm taking a class.

This morning - the system hung right after the Dell screen with a blinking cursor on a black screen. I then unplugged everything and it started up just fine. It's working well right now. What indexing options would you recommend?

I'm confused. Is your monitor plugged in or not. You can hook up whatever devices you wish AFTER the issue is resolved. As I understand it, your system hung and you unplugged "everything". Was there a BSOD? Did you leave things disconnected - that's what I recommend. What is connected now?

It's important to keep the folks on this side informed. In that regard, did you disable the USB devices? I guess I'd like to know about a Speccy report too. Are there any devices that show temps over 80 C ?

Since you reported a performance issue re: atikmpag.sys - AMD Mobility Radeon Driver Verification Tool. The interesting thing is, Dell states "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670" and your performance post states "AMD ATI Mobility Radeon 5700 series".
Edit: There was a qualifying OR "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730" on the Dell site.
Edit: Changed AMD tool reference to the correct one, I think.

Re: indexing - there's no need to index your entire C:\ drive, that definitely affects performance. Personally, I limit indexing my user tree C:\User\MyName

Keep the focus on the problem at hand. Once the BSOD issues are reolved, you can tweak your system. Changes made that are unrelated to this issue only confound the resolution. One step at a time and this issue is far more important than improving performance - although some suggestions migth accomplish both.

You can also use AMD auto-detect. I'm not sure how it will react if your driver is at a higher level. KoolKat pointed you to 12.8 on fileHippo - AMD search for your HW returns 12.6 - Use the Check link in my previous post and then see what auto-detect tells you. I don't know if one or the other does a detect-and-install, so the information might chnge based on your actions. I would suspect that you will have control over whether or not an install actually occurs - at least i would hope so.

I have everything disconnected except for the Logitech USB wireless receiver that powers my keyboard and trackball.

There haven't been any BSODs today but it hasn't been sleeping as I've turned that off. I ran an MSE quick scan earlier today - that went okay.

Is there anything else I should do right now? The most important thing for me would be to reconnect just my SyncMaster monitor as I find it difficult to work with the laptop screen. But I'll wait until you say go. Thanks again!

Yeah, sorry about that, I revisited my post after reading the Speccy output. The AMD detect tool I gave you was wrong, so that's why it didn't do anything. I've fixed my previous post so that others don't have the same misdirection.

Forget about my posts 34 and 35 - they don't add any value to troubleshooting.

Since your system is running barebones (except for the KB & Mouse) you should run that way for a while. Koolkat helped you resolve the issues related to the original BSOD, but there are obviously more things that need to be addressed if you want to run the ext monitor, TV, ext HDD and camera. There's defintely something pulling your system down related to the USB devices and the system hung with the ext monitor connected.

You have a backup - Right? And a Win7 install disk - Right?
You can continue trying to isolate the problems one by one or bite the bullet and do the clean install. Both can be a learning experience, it's just a matter of how much time is required to get your system stable. I wrestle with this decision everytime one of my machines acts up. I'll spend a week or two trying to fix it - until the point of deminishing returns.

It is your choice - I haven't given up yet, there are great tutorials re: installs if you need the help, but you seem competent.

I've just uninstalled all current AMD SW and installed new based on your recommendation 2 posts back. I've attached the screenshot for AMD Driver Autodetect utility and it also recommended the same driver. Then I rebooted.

Still can not get the Catalyst Control Center to load but that's a problem for an AMD forum

I played around with the system last night and everything seems to work without the monitors attached - the system sleeps and wakes, etc.

I have everything backed up and a Windows reinstall - so that might be my Sunday.

A stable system is Great news. After the clean install, make sure your drivers are up to date and all Windows updates are applied before attaching any external devices.

Dell has a nice document that describes the Driver installation order - good info there.

Good luck and post if you need help - might be better to create a new thread for new issues..... if they crop up
